So everyone hates US 5mph bumpers. Mk1 Euro bumpers are expensive, and no bumper looks okay, in fact I like it a lot but I want to do something different. Today I had a thought. What about bumperettes. Specially 70-71 Camaro bumpers.
I thinking about trying to adapt these to my Rabbit. Whatdaya think? For reference here’s a bumperlsss mk. Altho mine has round headlights.

70-73. Just sayin’ . I’m not sure they would scale down or if the radius of the curve would fit but luckily you can get them brand new for $150 if you want to give them a shot.

if you don’t like it when done, rip it off and start over. what’s the worst that can happen?

Could probably get a set of pitted chrome ones for a lot less, assuming they will be painted or plasti-dipped.

True, and I didn’t stop to think that they would probably be painted. Hell, I have a set of mangled ones laying around somewhere so I’m sure someone has a set of straight ones with bad chrome that they’re trying to get rid of.

I just had an odd thought...
Take the original bumper mounts:
Add some of these:
Add photoshop and BOOM. New fad:

A bit of patina would fit the car. Problem is a lot of Chevy guys want the original parts and are willing to restore them. So they may not be cheaper than remanufactured ones

The bottle to bite would be $ 130 price tag

Hahaha that would be awesome!
I did also consider a log bumper just got kicks

True, the bumperettes are easy to ship and therefore easy to have fixed wherever in the USA they still allow chrome plating.

I like 5 mph bumpers?
At least most of them. The only cars they bug me on (that I can think of off the top of my head) are:
and

I’ve always thought they were a bit too much of a muchness on ‘74+ Lincolns and Cadillacs.
(compare, ‘72, both cases )
Also on the Maverick/Comet.
Eww.

Doesn’t look much if any worse to me, but then I’m not at all a fan of ‘70s domestics in general.

Even if you don’t like the MavComet, you can probably admit this looks cleaner, though:
Not the “I AM LITERALLY A MURSI TRIBESWOMAN FROM ETHIOPIA” lip plate look.

I think that could look good. Or you could use the rear bumperettes of an Opel GT or the rear bumper of a 1969-74 MGB. I could not find anything cheaper than a set of the RS bumpers that you could just order online.

It does look better. Though I think the biggest problem is not that it sticks out, but that they painted the the top. Doing it in chrome would have looked much better. The car you posted would have looked similarly bad had they painted the flat sections on top of the bumper green.

How would you describe the effect of removing the bumpers on handling and weight distribution?

Ithink it would look good, mounting may be your only problem.

Shouldn’t be to hard to make up some brackets. They won’t be functional as a bumper but they aren’t on the Camaro either

Goodly

I’m just wondering about where it curves around the fender vs. where it mounts to the body

Even with them mounted a ny collision with a deer or lee side of a ditch wa s going to be unenjoyable. I say follow your questionable decision making that has lead you thus far while using some discretion. If that means bumperettes, so be it.

Needs more Dagmar bumpers.
In reality, I think your idea would look good. I had found the Dagmar picture and couldn’t resist sharing,

I won’t lie the thought crossed my mind. In general I want to back date the car. The previous owner did the carb swap so the process was already started. But I really want the car to show more of its 1976 roots than it’s 1984 year. And none of the 1988 refresh the car eventually got.
