My brother has his heart set on a Subaru; he is shopping Imprezas and legacy’s. If I understand the FB recall right; if the vehicle exhibited high oil consumption before the end of the warranty period; then it’s covered by the extended warranty . If the vehicle didn’t show symptoms until after the original warranty, you are hosed.
He is shopping 2012-2013s.
Ergo, his best bet is to find a car that’s had its rings corrected and has an extended warranty; correct? And any Subaru dealer should be able to tell him if a car has been fixed by vin?

Thats a safe way to do it.

The “excessive oil” issue is way overblown (heh). Most Subarus won’t have trouble. Even if it does go through a quart every 5k miles, eh.
Just buy one that’s been well maintained and don’t stress out too much.

I’m not very up to date on it all. Would a compression test be smart before buying?

I think I would buy an extended warranty if the car was no longer under the class action suit. My Outbacks engine was warrantied at 30k, and it seems to be fine now at 55k. I can’t stress enough how much it sucks to have a nearly new car burning 1qt of oil
every 1000 miles. 10/10 would look for something different like a Mazda cx5/Rav4/CRV/etc..
. Subaru’s warranty seems to be applied very differently depending on the dealer and region you live in.
I got very good service here in MT but I have friends in CA with a 2103 forester burning 1qt/600 miles and they are getting the run around.

I would like to eventually see
some real numbers like percent of cars that have been affected. My feeling is that it is in the 10% range
. The thing is you always hear the bad stories louder than the 90% of people who don’t have any issues at all.

I replaced a shit load of blocks for this. It’s not “overblown”

Idk man. I’ve owned Subaru’s on and off for nearly my whole driving life (though all were EJs) and I just assumed that a 1/2 or a full quart of oil per 1000 miles was the norm. You just get in the habit of checking and adding.

I only worked as a Subaru tech for about a year and I had more engines out in one year than the previous 15
