Because I really don’t know what to say.

The coloring is definitely period correct. I can’t help but think the livery would have fit better on a Gremlin than on a Pacer though.
Edit: I guess Continental already had that locked up :

You could say that the 70s were a weird time. I think the sky high interest rates and gas lines made everyone a little loopy.

The color schemes were hideous and about a third of the population thought the end of the world would happen any time now, as evidenced by many movies and books of the era. It seemed to color everything. Nobody gave a crap about anything as far as I could tell.

I was never much of a fan on the desert livery, or whatever they called it, but yes, it is definitely period correct. That said, it’s nice to see they are still rocking it in historical context. I shot this here in AUS back in 2016.

I prefer that to their current choice, despite the colors being a bit dated.

Southwest did a brief story on them a while back - they were used by their sales staff in the 70s for calls. Here’s another photo

I LUV it

I am not a fan of the new livery. For whatever reason, it just does not photograph well. I think the whole thing is too dark, and the blue is wrong. I still think this is the best of both worlds. Better shade of blue, while still retaining the iconic orange tail stripes that identify the brand.

And from the Oppo archives, Chris Clarke has a picture of the Gremlins (which were replaced by the Pacers):

Set the Wabac machine for 2014, Sherman! That’s neat.

They did have Gremlins - the Pacers replaced them:

“Dated” is just “Retro” once 30 years have passed. So we’re there.

I’d take the 70s over this decade in a heartbeat. Maybe that’s the rose-colored glasses of having been 10 in 1976. Sure, it was malaise, it was Jimmy Carter (who, despite being a mediocre president, was a genuinely good man), it was high gas prices. But at least we knew who our enemies were.

before I clicked to read this I only saw the plane and thought this would be about Flight 255, which happened 31 years ago thursday.

That was Northwest 255 . Kind of confused me there for a second. But that makes me think I should write something about it for Thursday.

So would I. Mostly because I’m 18 and would give my left nut to see a Joni Mitchell concert.

erp, nevermind. some reason it made me think of NWA’s older white/gray/red livery.

No worries. I appreciate the reminder about this crash.

I forget to add: the music was much, much, much, much, much, much, much better.

the ... but ... why ... uh ... but ... why ... ?
Why a fender bender right in front of the 7-something-7 ? Cool colors though.
And the Pacer is a fantastic looking car. Fight me.

They’re kissing. As to the Pacer, you are entitled to your opinion. You are also entitled to be wrong.

Oh yeah. I love living in an age where internet music lets me hear all this stuff. I probably wouldn’t have heard much of the stuff I like had I been alive back then, since I couldn’t have been bothered to buy an whole album just to get one or two songs.

But that was the only way to get the music, and we didn’t know any different.

Oof! That 1970 color palette. Brutal. Sorry Dark brador. If those ever return, sign me up for colorblindness.

It doesn’t feel like it was THAT long ago that SWA was running that colour scheme. I dunno, maybe I’m senile, but the current purple scheme seems to still feel...new...to me?

There was an interim livery that moved over to more blue but kept the desert sunset stripes and the Southwest on the tail. I think it was a fantastic look, much better than the new livery. I don’t like the latest one. It doesn’t photograph well at all.
They’ve also got some retro livery aircraft running around. Or at least they used to. I photographed this one back in 2016.
