E36 318 sedan 5 speed. $1000
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I’m half looking for a cheap beater. Bad paint aside this looks too good to be true for a $1000 beater, it’s like 5 minutes from my work.

Seems like about the right price

it’s like 5 minutes from my work.
So I assume you’ve already made an appointment to look at it? Looking is without risk.
Before you buy , do some research into the weaknesses of this model though. And do the standard used old car checks. And expect to have to fix a lot of little things.

Check engine light on aswell. “minor” cosmetics, probably the same care taken towards the mechanicals.

Have not, although it would be convenient.

I wouldn’t buy it. Because the fact the seller didn’t bother to throw away his trash and vacuum before taking pics says a lot. This is intriguing. https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/d/i-bmw-5-speed/6663500125.html
https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/d/1984-bmw-733i-5speed-manual/6637218706.html Maybe not technically a beater but thats dope. And you can probably get the price down because there isn’t a ton of love for e23s

Looking is without risk.
I would normally agree, except this is Craigslist we’re talking about. I absolutely factor the Law of Robbery
Averages into my desire to look at anything I find there.

The biggest of all red flags there

As an idea it’s fine. Actually purchasing this is probably not fine.
Wait ... does this have one wheel that’s different than the rest?

Ask about that mismatched wheel. If an impact was bad enough to ruin the original wheel it could almost certainly have caused suspension damage too. Make sure it was all fixed up right.

This doesn’t look sketchy at all though, being a 20+ year old BMW with fast food containers and a $1k price.
Still though, you can always park a block away, leave your wallet and other valuables in your car and p ut enough cash for a taxi in your pocket (for plausible deniability)

Find out if any cooling system work has been done, particularly the plastic water pump and crimp-sealed radiator . Those are known wea k spots for BMWs of this era. If they are still somehow original, factor in replacing those as part of your purchase cost.

Yet another green flag on this purchase!

This does not look too good to be true.
![]() 08/13/2018 at 09:44 |

You could ask about the wheel and cooling, but I suspect the answer is going to be along the lines of “it’s a running/driving $1000 car, do you want it or not? ”.

This is the answer right here.

He checked, it was still there!

Cooling system is a make-or-break thing though. If it hasn’t been done, and it’s not a job UnderSTeer can do themself , this is suddenly a running/driving $2,000 car.

If it were the cool hatch back thing, NP. As it is, this is just a clapped out high mile 3 series.
