Tonsil infection update

At my breaking point. Haven’t had a solid meal in three days. Haven’t slept through the night in four. Keep waking up every two hours choking on mucus that I can’t clear out because hacking it up or swallowing it hurts to tears. Post pretty Jaaaags to make me feel better.

This is going on ten days now. Three-day Z-Pack did nothing. Starting to have to take dangerous amounts of ibuprofen to have any effect, and it wears off long before it’s safe to take more. Somehow dehydrated despite consuming mostly fluids.

The healthcare system here is set up to work well for the 15k permanent residents. There are upwards of 150k people here in the summer. All doctors are booked two months out. Many stop doing walk-in hours completely for the summer and those that do only have them when I’m supposed to be at work. I basically have one shot per week of seeing a doctor, and only if I camp out in front of their office to be first  in line when they open.

I’m really sorry to hear that you’re still not feeling any better. You might consider ringing up 112 and asking for a lift. If that’s what it takes to get some reasonable level of care, I wouldn’t hold it against you.

Emergency room’s just gonna give me highly addictive painkillers and tell me to w ait it out, and charge me a ton of money for the privelage.

Ooh man, I had a tonsil infection a couple times, and once strep throat at the same time. It’s brutal, like razor blades in your throat. I was forcing myself to drink water, and couldn’t talk. I was on amoxicillin for 2 or 3  weeks I think, then it came back, then either more amoxicillin, or a different antibiotic for another 2 or 3 weeks and it was finally gone. Lots and lots of different kinds of cough drops, especially strepsils because of the numbing. Good times.

If a patient’s pain and other symptoms aren’t improving, or are getting worse, and if the patient is starting to choke on his own secretions, oral antibiotics might not be suffici ent to clear up the problem. Patients in this situation should skip the doctor’s office and get to an emergency room!  Seriously!!  This could be a life-threatening illness.

Sometimes, the antibiotics are ineffective or inappropriate to the type of infection  and you need more powerful ones. If the Z pack isn’t working, you need to go back.

Don’t mess with infections. Next stop is pneumonia and stop after that is us wondering why you haven’t posted for a while. Get antibiotics now!

I had chronic tonsillitis when I was a kid - Three or four times a year. At 12 I actually asked if the doctor could just remove the tonsils because I was sick of it. My parents were told there was no need, that I’d grow out of it. Fast forward nine years. During finals week at college I didn’t take good enough care of myself and got a bad case of it again. Made it through finals but got home for the summer feeling like I was swallowing glass. By the time it was done I had to get IV fluids from dehydration, the doctor had to lance an abscess in the back of my throat and take the tonsils out once the infection cleared. The doc said if the abscess had burst and I had swallowed it, I probably would have died.

Seriously, if a course of Zpack didn’t do it, get back  to the doc. Even “just” tonsillitis could kill you.
