I'm moving to the wilderness in Alaska

Where only bears and the brutal winters can kill me.

I seriously cannot take driving in the DC Metro traffic any more . Everywhere I go there are fools, road ragers, self-centered a@@hols, and clueless distracted drivers.

OK, I’ll go back to my boring suburban life. But if one more a-hole cuts me off or runs a red light I’m moving to the arctic circle and buying a dog sled.

You could also move into a city with effective public transportation.

I like driving around here. It's kill or be killed. Much, I imagine, like the wilds of Alaska.

You could move further south where only the heat and mosquitoes will kill you

mosquitoes are the worst things on the planet

See the problem there is that DC probably has the second best public transport in the country. Unless he wants to move to New York, or leave the country he’s not going to do much better.

I can personally attest that moving south to Houston would not be any help with these problems. Drivers are probably a bit less aggressive on average, but the make up for it by being stunningly bad at nearly every aspect of driving, and completely obliviousness  to any surrounding road and traffic conditions.

I’ve been here since 1977. I neither love it or like it. It’s just “traffic” to me.

However, when I go on road trips it’s quite a nice change. The last week long road (motorcycle) trip I took I honked my horn once, and that was to get my buddy’s attention.

First day back , I hon k ed three times on the way to work.

the mosquitoes in Alaska might not kill you, but might suck you into a fatigued state to be bear bait.

But Houston is one of those rare places you can be in bumper-to-bumper traffic while doing 80 mph.

Driving in Alaska is heaven, windy mountain roads everywhere. Many have little to no traffic with incredible views.

Since I left 15 years ago everybody I know who is still there tells me the winters are pathetic now. Of course they have lived there their entire lives so they have nothing to compare it to.

It’d be nice to be in an Asian or European city with awesome transit. As much as I love cars I feel like driving with the general public is becoming more and more annoying over time.

My favourite cities allow alcohol consumption in public and have great transit systems. Gotta wait for a train? I’ll get a beer. Long train ride to the other side of town? I’ll get a beer. Most Japanese cities fit the bill quite nicely. France was quite alright except for the fact that their subways can be absolute filthpits (Paris, for example, but Lyon was quite nice in comparison).

I was mostly in and around the loop, and you rarely get that type of driving there. Much more common are people going 20 under for no reason.

I’m staying on the NW side of the loop. I’ve been going downtown for the most part, so it’s north loop to 45 to 10 to downtown. Each of the merge lanes is a mess, especially where the loop meets 45.

However, when I’m heading out to one of the sites, the traffic flows fairly well, but I’m sure it’s the time of day.

When I have to go to Hook’s airport, the traffic on 45 is hauling ass once we get north of the loop .

Every time I contemplate Alaska I remember that driving in a naked Jeep there would be like rolling out a banquet for  the mosquitos.

I recently moved into that big white zone in the western US  from the green. Having no mosquitos is seriously may be the greatest thing about living here so far.

I never thought they were that bad unless I was actually out in the forest. Besides it isn’t real warm there, even in the summer everybody wears pants and long sleeves.  My AK summer clothing became my Ohio winter clothing when I moved.

In Florida I get eaten alive in shorts after dark.

After a super close call the other night (Uber driver in a Prius cut me off to make a left turn from the right lane of a two-lane, one-way street), I finally ordered a dash cam.

Fair enough.  I haven’t gotten a single mosquito bite since I moved here, though.   There may be some around but they are practically nonexistent.

In the dry/cold part of the country they are rarer due to lack of standing water. Trust me, I’ve been eaten alive by mosquitos in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Western South Dakota, Western Nebraska,  and Arizona. It’s just that you only suffer from the allergic reaction rather than from some infectious agent.

The bonus I find in that region is the lack of ticks. The western half of the country seems to have far fewer of these than the eastern portion. Every time I am in the Minnesota/Wisconsin/Michigan area I pick up ticks all the time, but I’ve never encountered one west of there.

Well duh.

But it still amazes me that, of all the things out there that could have killed him, it was misidentified berries that did it.

Kinja'd!!! Eric @ opposite-lock.com > WilliamsSW
08/12/2018 at 22:30

Kinja'd!!!0

It wasn’t berries that killed him.

His fatal mistakes were many - going into the wilderness without a map, not bringing supplies, nobody knowing where he was, not bringing food, not knowing enough about what he was eating, going the wrong time of year, not bringing a radio, and not exploiting any of his options for survival.
