So, I agreed to the job. It went from a slight pay cut to a slight pay raise. So that’s nice, plus the car allowance and gas.

I really appreciate the car advice you people gave me. Some solid ideas and stuff I had not considered.

Today I test drove a 2 door Wrangler Sport with the 6 speed and I loved it. I know it doesn’t make the most sense, but I kinda want to try some light off-road stuff.

Kinja'd!!!

This is a spitting image of the one I drove. I could totally see myself driving it. I’d make some slight mods, but no bro Jeep. I like that it is so basic (no AC, wind up windows, manual mirrors) and is the opposite to the ST in every way possible.

Ultimately , I am not ready to give up the ST. I will drive it until I can’t do my job anymore with it or I feel ready to get rid of it.  But, I really think a Wrangler will be the replacement.

Congrats indeed! A pay bump is great news a well! I'm sure your current employer is going to miss you.

Does that have more storage space inside than the FiST? A better vehicle for your needs, no doubt, but just curious.

It doesn’t, but part of the draw of a Jeep is that I wouldn’t really care too much about it.  I’d just throw my shit in the back seat or whatever.

I also went and looked at a basic Jeep yesterday. 4-cyl, 5-speed, 2wd. It came home with me.

I can’t, however, recommend using a basic no-options ZJ as a tow pig. It took it, but I’m pretty sure I shortened my clutch life by 50% on a couple hill-starts, and factory a/c delete was rough at nearly 40° in southern Alberta. Heavier rear springs and deeper gears  are also a must for that much weight, I’m gonna say.

Is this an allowance you can just put to whatever car you want to buy/lease for yourself or do they end up owning it, and you just get to use it?

In the former case, I’d much rather they just gave me the money instead of putting it off to the side as a car allowance, but setting that aside, I’d probably just buy something relatively cheap and practical (yes I’m boring) , and just use the allowance to pay off the loan quickly (and then sell/trade in when paid off, unless I needed an extra car ).

I’m sure there are plenty of tempting cars you could lease for that amount (it was a generous allowance right), but it feels better to end up with something you own (this might just be a special case of the lease vs. buy debate).

In any event, congratulations.

Also, your Jeep is backwards...

Get the AC please. You won’t regret it. Of course I might be the hottest person on the planet considering I’m always nearing full sweat.

Its $500 cash each month regardless of what I own.

Seems like a decent deal. As noted, I’d just get something practical rather than trying to figure out the fanciest thing I could lease for that amount.

No AC? That might be kind of rough to deal with if you’re going to potentially be spending that much time in it, considering the summers we’ve been getting. Especially if you parked for extended periods of time, watching stuff. Top off might be less than stealthy at best, and at worst might make you a lobster man... And we already have one of those here.

Could always kick in another 5 of your own and lease a 911.   That'll blend right in.

I agree. Isn't that what a base Wrangler would be?

Quite possibly. I think it depends on the type of driving you’ll be doing.

Suburban/Country mostly. Need the ability for light off pavement, like a construction site or unpaved farm road. All weather types and all times of day

I mean eventually. But I left town at midnight on Thursday, and then did 18 hours mostly driving, including through steep&narrow mountain passes with way more weight than I should’ve been pulling , in 100°F heat during the day, then some more driving, then some broken sleep cause it’s so ridiculously hot still that sleep is difficult and it was afternoon and there’s a huge party being loud at my neighbour’s. Maybe tomorrow. Also I wasn’t going to post anything on social media until the “Yaris” was unloaded, cause you never know who’s watching.

Doooo iiiiiit

Unless the JLs really are a lot improved over the JKs in NVH, I have no idea how anybody dailies these without some good off-road fun, but with the regular enjoyment of   the sheer and  infectious off-road audaciousness Wranglers have I would do it.

I vote you option just two things: AC and cruise control. Spring for the dual top option, too. It’s nice to have the soft top to let back/ easily remove/install during the summer months, and it’s nice to have the hard top during the long cold winters.

The Pentstar/6-speed is a great combo and should return respectable fuel economy with a decent amount of fun factor!

The hardtop is definitely nice to have.
