How bad is this?

This is my rear subframe. On the bracket thingy I removed a layer of rust by my hand. How worried should I be about the subframe? Does Oppo think that I will need a new subframe in the future?

As a New England resident that looks like a minor case of surface rust to me. Sand it off and hit it with some black paint and you are good as new. Every car I have ever owned has looked way worse than that.

No need to replace until it snaps in two. Even then just weld it

Aah, good to know that. I was a bit anxious about that.

Thanks!

Oh god, you’ll have no car left if Borsuq does it! :P

IMO it looks like pretty minor surface rust, nothing major! Tap on it a bit with your hand - it’s pretty easy to tell when metal is still solid!

If it was my car, I’d treat it with a wire brush and then put some rust remover on it. Being in Europe it’s no use recommending a certain product which isn’t available to you anyway. Just something which you can apply with a brush that looks clear but turns gooey black like undercoating once it hits oxidised metal. Used it on sev eral vehicles along the years and never had to bother with  these spots again.

I wouldn’t be worried. Treat and topcoat it and any other rust you can find and it’ll be fine.

Have I mentioned I have a car which doesn’t have rockers or most of the pinch weld?
