The M2 shoulda been a 4-Cylinder
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:01 |

Why
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:02 |
|
Ultimate lightness and historic precedence.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:06 |

Turbo 4 at least? Otherwise I don’t know how a 4 banger properly motivates 3,450* lbs of German schteel.
(* Probably lighter with the 4 instead of 8, I know)

Oh
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:07 |

...so a 230i with a body kit?
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:11 |

Turbo 4 of course. And the 4 cylinder weighs 3300lbs before swapping all of the aluminum bits in that the M2 gets over the standard steel parts. Realistically with some CFRP the car could get to 3200lbs or less.

needs more box flares

No.
I know the argument is “ because E30 M3" but what’s the weight difference between the M2 and that car?
The M240i offers what, 3 2 0 HP? I’d give a hard pass to a 360 HP 4 banger from BMW.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:15 |

I mean the M2 is an M235i with a body kit. So....
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:17 |
|
Even if it was over 200lbs lighter?
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:28 |
|
Right but you said 4-cylinder. 235i is a 6.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:29 |
|
Correct. But if you’re going to make one feel mundane you have to admit they’re both mundane.

Why can’t I give all the stars anymore?!?!?!
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:31 |

That won't make up for the 160hp.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:32 |

Youre talking nonsense.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:33 |

Would that improve the weight distribution?
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:34 |

What E90M3 said. You can get more power from a 3 liter tha n a 2 liter, easily.
The E30 was a 4 banger for a reason - the logic doesn’t extend to the M2, or any other M car these days.

200 pounds?
The N55 only weighs 290. So....how?
![]() 08/09/2018 at 22:36 |
|
The M2 is 51/ 49 as is, so technically yes, but the car is pretty balanced as is.

I only see this working if it is a stripped out, light weight “clubsport” model.
Even then, it would be a really hard sell to price that and it’s inevitably-laggy 4 cylinder turbo motor above the smooth, luxurious and responsive M240i.
I’d love to say that the 2-series should have never had 6-cylinder engines in the first place, but they’re too big and heavy. There just isn’t enough of a size and price gap IMO between the 2-series and the 3-series. The old 1-series was the perfect size, and hilariously fun to drive.

What 160hp? I’d take a B48 over an N55 any day.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 23:02 |
|
Have you driven a B48? What lag? And if they built a real S engine off of it with a twin turbo setup there’d be even less issues with power I’m sure.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 23:08 |

No... don’t kill any inline 6 options.
What BMW 2-series needed, is a liftback.
![]() 08/09/2018 at 23:26 |

I though they did and just called it a Mini JCW something or other...

Whoah whoah woah! Hold your your horses buddy, there is a fine line between mere sacrilege and down right heresy and you’re straddling it.
(To be completely honest I thought the M2 was already a turbo four).
![]() 08/10/2018 at 01:06 |

When you pump a B48 up to 360+ hp, it’s gonna have lag. A fancy twin turbo system won’t make it any better. It’s still a 2 liter engine.

Wait long enough and your wish will come true... it’s only a matter of time before we see ///M models downsizing to turbo 4's instead of turbo 6's.

I f you drive the B48 and B58 back to back ( as I have), the biggest difference in normal driving is the lag in the B48.
Is it lag gy? No, it’s not - it’s a great engine. But not as good as the B58, and lag won’t improve when you pressurize it up to the HP needed.
