Life and the human condition never cease to amaze. Today I watched my car get hit in a parking lot. 10am, sunny, and quiet. Just as I came out of the mall
I glanced at my car parked in the first stall from the doors (40ft away),
and caught a glimpse of a late model Toyota Highlander backing into the rear diagonally. There was nothing between my eyes and that car. It rocked the car.
I watched the driver put it in Drive and a move forward 6ft before my legs kicked in. We met in the middle and I was at the end of the hood. I stepped around to the downed driver’s window and said,“You just hit my car. Why are you driving away?” Clearly in extreme shock they replied, “It’s okay, I have sensors.”
I SHIT YOU, NOT.

You should’ve said “O
h, you have sensors?! T
hat’s OK then. You’re free to go, I’ll call the cops.”

I went to check my bumper while they parked beside. It was okay and I told the driver. I suggested we look at their vehicle. There were a couple of black rubber streaks on their bumper that I am sure they’re from my bumper. I pointed them out and their reply was, “It’s okay they were there before. It’s okay, I have sensors”. I SHIT YOU, NOT.

Electronic safety t echnology in cars can do a really good job of turning people into blithering morons

Further advancement could help some of those truly in need. Case in point.

Regardless that's an incident I would've said to the driver: making contact with another vehicle and driving off is considered hit and run, even if there is negligible damage.

So what did you say to them? Cause had it been me, unless they were elderly, they would have heard some stuff.

So did they do any damage
to it? Did you get their info?

Was “i t’s okay, I have sensors” supposed to be a response to “y ou just hit my car”, or an answer to “w hy are you driving away?”? Doesn’t make sense either way.

And the sensors probably noticed your car

Further advancement of electronic safety nannies usually only further removes personal accountability.

My parents had to drive manuals in their youth and they still don’t fully understand how manuals work. People just had to make do with what they had in their day.

Few people do...even many contributors on this site, I would suggest.
It not about knowing how stuff works...it’s more about knowing what it is used for and how it is best operated. The loss of this tehnical skill is something to be somewhat lamented especially since t here is no fundamental technical reason why auto boxes are an improvement on manual gearbox es in any way other than convenience for the user.
