My friend’s wife is out of town, so we’re playing golf and probably going to a cigar bar.

That sounds intriguing and disturbing.

It’s early, but I’m out planespotting this morning and I’m already one cigar down for the day. Wake and bake!

Power wash the patio today, birthday party for a 12 year old tonight ( friend’s son) and a petting zoo tomorrow.
Not super exciting, but mostly relaxing.

I am going to Chicago today. Going to go on Gangster tours, drink bathtub
liquor, have a Chicago Handshake (Malort and Old Time or PBR), and goto a proper German pub for Bayern Munich vs Frankfurt!

Neat! We went to Charlotte to watch Dortmund beat Liverpool. Attended a BVB fan event at a pub near the stadium. Good times!

Subjecting my kids to forced labor while the wife is out for the weekend. If they work hard there may even be a reward or two in it for them!

Well, rocket assist .

Whenever my kids grouse about doing chores, I say, “You eat here, you sleep here, you work here.”

In a nutshell, about 20 years ago I and a colleague drove to U Southern Miss for the event, based around an appearance by Doc Severinsen. They managed to amass about 800 trumpet players, but then they complained that it was too loud. Go figure. We did manage to get in a Houston Astros game on the way home, though, so it wasn’t a total loss.

The Me 163 was arguably rocket assisted, as it spent much of its time gliding....
The late and great Eric Brown flew one, because of course he did.

Thanks, I got into a grad
school at northern Illinois, and we're almost all packed up, but just about everything is still up in the air. Hooray for the last minute.

I remember with crystal clarity when I packed up to go to grad school in TX. Packed up my VW Fox wagon with everything I could take and hit the road. Left my fiancee behind to finish her last year of undergrad. Scary and exciting at the same time. What are you studying?

Philosophy. I got funded, which sometimes means it's worth it. I'm hoping it will be in my case.

Congrats. I eventually earned my doctorate in music back in 99. At the time, I was looking for a college teaching job (glad I never got one). I did get some final round interviews, and I asked how important it is to have the terminal degree. One of the committee members said, “We take all the applicants with doctorates and put them in one pile. We put everybody else in a second pile. We start with the first pile, and likely never get to the second pile.”

What did you wind up doing instead?

All my degrees are in trumpet performance, so I became a performer. The plan for our family was that I would get a teaching job and my wife would stay home with the kids we were planning to have. Since I didn’t get a job, she went to work and I stayed home with the kids. I worked freelance for a long time, but I’ve finally landed a gig with the local symphony and opera orchestra. So basically, she works days and I work nights and weekends. I’m happier as a performer than I ever would have been as a teacher.
