Booger NEVER goes in the Mustang but, I had to come watch my parents dogs so I brought him along.
Do you out down blankets or what? How do you minimize damage done?
Also, old little dogs aren’t getting along with big young dog.

I always just let them ride on the seats, though given that my old car did have one claw mark on the back seat’s leather , so that might not be optimal.
Bigger problem for me was launching dogs under hard breaking though. There are restraints that you can clip into a hardness and then into the seat belt, but from what I read, it’s not at all clear that that is actually safer for the dog.

just a towel down on the seat makes a world of difference. If you REALLY like your car, use a folded blanket, and vacuum the car once a week.

The only dog I ever really had ride with me was my Great Dane. I’d just put him in the backseat with a blanket and given the size o f the dog (large) and the size of the car (small) he couldn’t go anywhere.

He stayed on the floor mat the whole time, still going to vacuum the car after the weekend.

Booger was surprisingly good at staying on the floor mat.

He got banged around a little bit but, he'll be alright. The floor might be his spot though.

I’ve definitely had a couple who preferred just sleeping in the passenger footwell, which is a pretty secure spot for them. Most want to look out the window though. And I had one foster who managed stand on the window control and roll down the window within 5 minutes of picking her up from the rescue, which would have been an awkward conversation if she had jumped out. The weirdest though was one who liked to wedge himself up on the parcel shelf (which I guess has a good view, but couldn’t have been very comfortable).

In the FiST I use a shower curtain. It provides claw protection, and liquid protection.
In the 4Runner, I use the seats.

My dog’s been riding with me for 14 years. He knows when I’m going to break before I know I’m going to break. Also, purchased seat covers. Pitty hairs are thick and ugly to deal with.

Ginger has a doggy car seat. She’s supposed to sit in it but she just stands on it so she can see out the window better.

I put a large blanket over the rear seats, then use a dog hammock on top of that.
When letting them in and out of the car, I try to remember to pull the blanket over the door sill.
Last weekend I forgot to do that, and the dog ripped the rubber door seal and put a long scratch in the paint climbing out of the car. (Golf)
Her brother jumps in and out of the car, but she is much more cautious.
Just spent an hour w crazy glue and silicone sealant trying to repair the damage to the rubber door seal. And scratch repair compound. But I’m no Svend.

Set a cooler in the footwell so they can lay down on the seat and cooler
