I’d say staying at stock track width is probably the least odd thing going on there.

Yeah, in that respect it’s well executed, the cage looks good, in every respect it appears to be competent. Just... odd. I’m guessing the Custom Cab was handy and he wanted to build it cut-down-pickup style, regardless if a little bodywork on a 4runner would have worked. In fairness to this guy, the Custom Cab *might* be better weather sealed than a modded 4runner body, and if he’s put a bed in back or something, the windows and such might be nice.

Then again, we come to the part where the cage is built extravagantly over the raised roof. The whole thing is not bad (unless he offroads with buddies and they get trapped in the back), just very odd.

He didn’t even paint the bodywork.

Custom Cab top skylight fiberglass bulge = Toyota Moose Knuckle?

Looking again at that cage..... I’m not sure it’ll do much. There’s no triangulation, some unsupported bends in the middle of a span, probably some other problems I’m not seeing from this angle.

At least it has a competant roll bar behind the cab, but I really don’t think the cage will do much other than add to the damage of the cab in a rollover.

It’s not a real trophy truck or rockcrawler cage, even though it’s pretending to be. However, it’s still more cage and better executed than the *factory* cage that was sold on NAS Defender 110s, and probably would serve much the same - in a sideflop, light backflip or short roll, prevent a weak roof from completely collapsing.

That Bulldog is a clever idea apart from the work involved - hybridizing a 110 single cab and a 110 double cab bodywork wouldn’t be all that easy. Actually, I tell a lie - it wouldn’t be that hard, except that you’d have to disassemble the front ends of both beds completely at the welds and spot-weld the double cab bulkhead into a single-cab bed with the foremost bulkhead removed.

Very little cutting and bending as such, more like disassembling and rebuilding a giant Meccano project. The most cutting involved would be to install the (very discreet, I note) cage.

Isn’t this how any bodywork on a 110 works?

Have removed/replaced whole rear fender sides on Series, damaged bed floor/rear chassis mount angle, etc. - can confirm.

It would appear that the rear space is not for seating, as there’s a huge X-brace across behind the seats. Enclosed storage, at least, so not useless. I’d be a bit curious as to how they handled the cut-off door tops in back of the cab - it almost looks as if they’re hinged, which is one way to have additional access to the rear space, I suppose.

Not surprised it’s got Bowler’s typical IFS in lieu of the solid front axle.

One odd bit of bodywork - there are no dash vents. None, and not even the faux dash-vent stamping that utility 110s normally get. I suppose this means that Bowler make their own bulkheads - which doesn’t surprise me much, I suppose, allows much heavier build and bracing - but was something I hadn’t known.

I think they took a regular three door Defender 110, stuc k a twin crew cab on it, then added the door tops from a set of Series rear doors for access.

Bowler do similar with the Nemesis. What would of been the rear windows, is access to rear storage.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

The bulkhead as you said could of been manufactured in- house and not added air vents.

I guess it’s better than nothing, but it is a lot of tubing for a mild increase in protection.

And I did notice that above the roof there are tubes that terminate in the middle of another span.

I mean, usually those external cages are usually meant to help protect the body in addition to the occupants, and I’m pretty sure the cage up there isn’t going to protect the body from rocks or rollover very well.

I figure the top cross-frame stuff will limit a point intrusion to some degree and brushguard branches off. Stuff on the back, I figure containing tires and minimally bracing the rear hoop is all they wanted other than looks anyway.
