Looks intriguing, but I wish they had kept the same mantra alive as with the older version: a small SUV with the DNA of the GTI. For the most part, I found that pretty accurate. For this price, I’d expect the 2.0t with a ~220hp tune. $34k+ buys a lot of car.

The T-Roc fits that description. But of course VW has no plans to release it for the NA market...

I liked the old size, I do wish the engine was more powerful but with the 2.0L Turbo, it should be pretty easy.

The old one was just a little too short, but I don’t know that adding 11" and a third row was the solution (especially a penalty box third row like this). OTOH, the Atlas is far too large and ungainly for me. And looks like a pile. But that’s subjective...

Agreed, although t he T-Roc is marginally smaller than Golf, but heavier.

Looking at the picture above it looks like that’s the LWB 7-seater version of the Tiguan as well, the ‘Allspace’. Quite a sizable car already, no ‘compactness’ left there . It’s considerably longer than a Golf wagon while the T-Roc is shorter than a Golf hatch.

You know the VW you want, if it’s really VW that you want, is this.

Marginally longer, with a longer wheelbase and more usable cargo space than the LWB Tiguan. While weighing less with the same drive train. Also much faster/more economical with the same drive train.

Pretty much. I still have my 2001 B5.5, which is a bit smaller than the current Passat, but still works for me (though it’s a bit tight with four of us on long trips). There are just so few wagons left in the world with an upright rear end and voluminous cargo capacity.

But I’m a weirdo...I feel safer when I’m closer to the ground, so I still can’t get into the crossover/SUV trend, even if they do make sense most of the time.

I still can’t get into the crossover/SUV trend, even if they do make sense most of the time.

I’d argue the Passat is a better car in almost every way than the LWB Tiguan. More spacious (excluding third row seats), drives better, faster/more economical with the same drive train and roughly the same price. Crossovers/SUVs certainly make sense for some uses, but being shorter/taller/heavier certainly not most of the time.

I can imagine the lack of availability in the US and the resulting lack of economy of scale makes wagons less interesting there. But that’s due to the market, not due to the inherent strengths and weaknesses of the different vehicle concepts.

Outside the US, there are two sizes of Tiguan. The one we get is the big one and it’s called the Tiguan Allspace.

Kinja'd!!!

Instead of the new regular Tiguan, we get the old one that’s been renamed to Tiguan Limited.

Smaller and heavier but more rugged looking is what the market demands it seems   and VW is delivering.

Funny that VW is still offe ring the old Tiguan instead of the current swb Tiguan alongside the ‘ Allspace’ ( silly name) in the US.

Like I always say, VW has learned from the past and will continue to sell second grade cars in North America instead of the complicated Euro stuff. Bang for the buck is the way to go and VW wants market share, no matter what enthusiasts say.

For a long time, the easy way around certain emissions/efficiency requirements was to build something that could be called “a truck,” so crossovers could often meet all the criteria pretty easily, getting a waiver from the more stringent requirements. Once that ball was rolling, trends and buyer preferences followed.

Now it seems the only way to launch a wagon here is to add 1-2" of lift and some plastic cladding (Audi A4 Allroad, Golf Alltrack, Buick/Opel TourX, every Subaru, etc )

How did that happen? Maybe they’ll unblacklist us. I was pretty nice to it because for the most part it’s a pretty good vehicle .

I drove a Golf R from DC to New Orleans. And back. Apparently t h e r e is an unwritten 500 mile limit.

Oh yeah... whoops. One of the guys mentioned there were limits  when I was getting the Nissan, so I always make sure to ask if I think I’m going to hit it. Only got 200 miles out of the Tiguan. Maybe I can bring them back into the good graces. I left 500 mile son the table so almost averaging out to the limit?
