I needed wanted to replace the old faded, non-matching address numbers on our mailbox post, and after looking at several options at Home Depot and spending a day at a craft fair I came up with this:

Kinja'd!!!

RAM be creepin’

After seeing custom signs being made from old license plates and realizing that I had a bunch of plates from old cars I once owned , I had an epiphany.

Kinja'd!!!

I COULD GET DO THAT FOR OUR ADDRESS.

Plus I had never seen one made for a mailbox, so I decided to make one. Then I realized I did not have ANY plates with a 0 in them. Back to the craft fair.....

Kinja'd!!!

I paid a couple bucks (literally, they were $2 each) for the 4's and 0's on the left, and mated them with a pair off the wife’s old Cutlass Calais since it was easier to get all red numbers than the newer black number’d plates.

I thought of using the yellow and black plates from the 70's and 80's, but I didn’t think it would look as nice outside our house, which is grey with red & white trim.

Kinja'd!!!

Someday I’ll stop using my Trans Am’s trunk as a work bench

Using the tin snips I cut them up, trimmed the edges, and formed them to be rounded on the tops and bottoms to contour around some old wood siding from the house I had lying around.

Kinja'd!!!

Using some self tapping screws I attached them to the wood and cleaned them up

Kinja'd!!!

And test fit it on the mailbox pole

After

Kinja'd!!!

I will be staining/repainting the pole AND the faded mailbox (or replacing it with a nicer metal one) but for now I like how they turned out, and they’re nice and reflective so my house is easier to find in the dark!

Bonus!

Unrelated, your project was very cool, WI license plate story. One of my favorite moments inside the cheesehead borders was seeing an absolutely beat to death compact car with the custom plate LESPAUL on his 100th birthday as a tribute to him played on the radio.

Now for a devious question. You legally need to make another house number sign for the other side of the mailbox now don’t you?

There’s a matching one on the other side. Don’t know about legality since the ones that were on there didn’t match to begin with, and I live out in the boonies..... my mail is delivered by a Saturn Outlook.

I dig this. Especially since license plates are already painted for high visibility. Oh, and b onus points for not having to cut up older plates that don’t match the new ones.

Consequently, the Durango has all 3 numbers in its plate, and I was all like “MUAHAHAHA” then the wife said “no”.

I was thinking of doing different states and colors and whatnot but figured it would be too funky looking.
