I saw one of these for sale from a lower mainland Japan importer some months ago, early (~1999) model.  I think they wanted maybe 5-6K for it,

You can get a 1999 plate here in the U.K. for anything from £300 to £795 with 96,000miles on the clock.

A clean 2002, 29,000miles, 1.6 auto Avantgarde, £1,400.

I can believe it.  For many reasons, the lower end of the used car market in NA is quite competitive and expensive compared to Yurp or Blighty.
