Jesus christ. Vehicular Assault, Battery, Reckless Driving, Distracted Driving, if any of us normals did this we’d be financially ruined.
I’m betting the officer gets a week of paid time off during the ‘investigation’ on what happened, and ends up with no fines or suspension. And they’ll try to low-ball the value of the bicycle he destroyed.

Hmmm.
Operating a phone whilst driving,
Driving without due care and attention,
C utting short a turn,
Driving on the wrong side of the road,

Distracted policing at it’s finest

I read somewhere that the cop called in the state police to file a report in order to avoid any conflict of interest that would arise from doing it himself . Appropriate reactions from both parties here.

“I wasn’t texting I was just looking at my phone.”
That’s a distinction without a difference.

Here in Manitoba, Canada it’s illegal to use a phone when driving. 5 demerits which adds like $400CDN to the cost of your drivers license for the year slowing going away after years of clean driving , plus a $500 ticket and they impound your car for 3 days so you have those fees.
Officers are allowed to use their phones cause they’re professionals.
Sounds more like a money grab than something for safety.

And you thought they were all super humans. Just human after all.

I hope that was the case. Policy would usually prevent any officer from writing an accident report involving themselves, but it often gets kicked to his partner or other guys on the shift in their own department. The thin blue lie becomes strong when that happens. Having another agency do the investigation, and attracting some media attention to the incident, is that cyclist’ s only shot at not getting completely screwed.

I’m not sure I would have been asking for band aids. I think I’d be asking for paramedics just to be sure. I’ve been hit twice by incompetent drivers while on my bike . Ended up with a bunch of new bike parts after one of the wrecks. The insurance people were falling all over themselves to make sure I was made whole.
The worst wreck I’ve had involved a dog. That one sent me to the hospital with a broken hand and broken ribs, neither of which I could really feel until half a hour after the wreck.

Right! He also said "another officer was texting me" like that makes any difference.

I know an officer who was involved in an at fault accident in his patrol car. It was just a low speed fender bender. His punishment? 1 year driving ban. He was pretty much limited to desk work. That’s a big deal for someone trying to rise up through the ranks and get promoted. I think because of lawsuits most departments take these accidents seriously.

Most places officers are allowed to use mobile phones. Still be distracted driving though.

The fact that he was using it while negotiating a turn is just plain ridiculous.
