They bought back in 81 for around $40,000. Started rehabing the house in the 90’s. It’s nice now that all us kids are gone and keeping it clean. I told them to go for $350-375 and negotiate down. Oh well. They have another house already.
UPDATE 2! Buyers backed out. Of course it couldn’t be that easy. My parents also didn’t want a contingency, they wanted it sold, so that may have been the deal breaker. Even if they could have waited another month or two, I just hope it doesn’t bite them in the end.
Update 1: So the neighbor’s brother has been eyeballing the house for a while and noticing all the updates that’s been going on. They offered $326,000 and if any other offers were on it were willing to pay $1,000 more up to $349,000. Bummer dude. My dad did call me this morning and first thing said, “You were right.” I said one last time I told you and then changed to at least it’s over.
The neighbors got $20,000 “deal” and my parents get a quick transaction. Moving forward. They are buying my mom a newer car than her ‘05 explorer they have been dumping money into.

I can’t even fathom these historic house prices. Hell, I can barely fathom their current values. We pay so damn much for housing it isn’t even funny.

You see, it’s our fualt that I make the same money for the same level work my mother did in the 90s. It’s my fault salaries haven’t placed with inflation. It’s also my fault that people who have been in the same company for ever make 20 grand more than me a year for the same fucking job. It’s my fault I dont work 24 hours a day to pay off ridiculous student loans I needed to take to take this job in the first place. It’s all my fault.. fuck me.. and my wants to have the same life as the pervious generation...

I used to live off of Manchester in Des Peres. The house my parents sold for 80k in 1997 just got sold yet again, torn down, and rebuilt as a 625k monstrosity that barely even fits on the lot. I’m so glad to see my old town is going the way of super-unaffordable housing as well. So much for ever moving back because it won’t be worth it...

When I move again from suburbia it will be rual, minimum 20 acres, and no neighbors in sight.
My parents next house has some houses around, but they got 15 acres too.

Barely over 3x income (and I’ll wager a greater percentage earned more than average then, as the socio-economic gap was narrower then than now ). Average income today has been in the upper 50s for some time, yet the house is much more than 4x its 1980 price.
I live in an area where the lucky generations could buy a house in 1980 for 65K and have it be worth 1MM or more, these are just old tract houses, mind you.

Still, that adjusts to about $111,000 today , so that purchase did work out well for your parents. The truth is, in a lot of areas in the country, property values often barely keep pace with inflation.

Depends where you go, I’m about an hour from Philadelphia, and houses are damn cheap around here - like almost 1980s cheap . Even if you want something with a big lot out in the country.

I f you factor the interest for 30 years at 5%, you end up paying double the original loan amount.
Example : A loan of $240k dollars at 5% will cost you over $ 500k by the time you make all 360 payments. That doesn’t include the homeowners insurance or HOA dues.

Sure I have to live on Hoth for 2/3 of the year, and I live in the rural parts of WNY, but I am really happy my house was sub 100k and my mortgage is under $500 a month. Thrifty millennial .
