It’s Kerbal irl

Leduc 0.22

Nord 1500 Griffon

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Both very much engines with wings and a complete afterthought of a cockpit slapped on.

I love it.

I’m guessing you are going along for the ride with the Leduc no matter what. An ejection seat doesn’ t look very plausible.

I’ve 100% made this in Kerbal. I’ve always known that my designs, while unorthodox , would kinda work IRL.

aero design group: ok, I’ve just heard the news that out test pilots have been living to nearly 25yrs old. can we make a more dangerous flying jet stick plane thing?

I kind of want there to be a real jet with the cockpit faired directly into the tailfin Gee Bee style.

T he F-107 (which was roughly contemporary) had an ejection seat:

Granted there were apparently significant concerns as to how well it would actually work, but it was there.

The French certainly did make some strange planes back in the day .

This is the Sud-Est Grognard . It was powered not by a ramjet but by a Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet. Grognard means growler . I imagine that’s a pretty apt name.

i guess if ur going down and you have the 1% chance of not die, thats better than the 0% of riding it out

Theoretically (don’t know if it actually was) you could separate that whole pointy bit with some rockets and then parachute it like a capsule. I’d rather not be around when that happened tho.

Or the quasi-opposite: All pilot, tiny jet

Did you know that Dassault once created a VTOL prototype and called it the Balzac?

Ahh, the elusive “Ejection/Induction Seat”

Still better than a helicopter.

Kind of Boeing Bird of Prey, Tacit Blue, F-23- esque.

What’s old is new again. I’m fascinated by aircraft that were imagined back in the day but are only possible with now  modern technology. It shows that there were some brilliant designers back in the day who thought well into the future , but the laws of aerodynamics are eternal and immutable. We can imagine so much, but without the ability to build and control it’s only a dream.

The early F-104s had a downward-firing seat, as there were concerns the pilot would strike the tail otherwise. Personally, I’d rather chance that than be launched down at a high rate, and it seems the 104's pilots agreed. The C-1 seat was replaced with a standard seat early on.
