Dumb me didn’t read the schedule online and confidently waltzed into the closed shop. thought that things were like in Mexico, where people are !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and would open the DMV every day even during bank holidays.

Kinja'd!!!

But I was very wrong.

Apparently, today its “National Galicia Day ” or as people know it here “El Santiago” and it basically means I stupidly spent 40 minutes of my morning going to an inspection office that was bound to be closed. I read the schedule posted on the entrance to the office, it said that any festivity means they close.

Kinja'd!!!

If you ever come here, be warned that during the summer months people just don’t work. There’s a festivity every odd weekday, everyone is drunk all the time, and no one wakes up before 11A M. Well, the baker wakes up at 5AM, but that’s about it.

At least I got to see some fantastic wind mill parts, the one behind my car and the truck is 4m in diameter. I also got to see a firefighting jeep, but I didn’t take pictures because I’m an idiot.

Another shot of the 480s

Bit of advice about western Europe (ie France, Italy, Spain, etc...), phone ahead, check they are open, confirm times, etc... before setting off.

Many places will close for a festival, a national holiday, family event, half day for ................, etc....

Thankfully the U.K. isn’t anywhere near as bad as those countries and many only close for Bank Holidays/national holidays.

Noted. It was mostly my fault though.

I did get to see those turbines, which is always cool.

Ye’, it’s a pain in the arse.

Your on holiday, you think, right it’s 10:40am, I’ll pop down the shops, get a few odds and ends but before I do I’ll have a coffee, some breakfast and chill for a while.

Only to find out only the odd corner shop or bakery is open so no sit down coffee and chillout and a limited range of groce ries. It’s infuriating.

T urbines are cool.

I don’t believe any stats in that article. There’s no way the average working person in the US does only 1779 hours a year. That’s a full 37.6 days off. Most people can’t/won’t take their full vacation allotment that only amounts to 10 days at the vast majority of companies (if they offer any at all).

You must have laws that allow workers to do over 40/week without overtime and/or more readily turn them into full time employees.

I mean, I know Mexicans work hard, but they are also extremely family-oriented. I don’t know exactly how they operate when it comes to work , but of those I know, they’d do whatever it took to be with their family as much as possible.

Well, we’re also a society with huge gender role and imbalance issues.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a father would work 60 hours a week to “maintain the family” or some bullshit like that and never get to see their child while the mom stays with the kid. Though it is changing, as more women enter the workforce,   I hope those disparities start to go away.

The big issue, the one worth underlining, is that productivity is pretty low anyway, and that’s because of *under*employment, which is common in Mexico. We had a flood of higher education graduates who should be winninging 5 0-5 5,000USD a year but there isn’t demand for a professional workforce, so they find jobs paying 15 -2 0,000USD.

If I’m to follow the average salary for a recently graduated mechanical engineer when I graduate I’ll be expected to make around 800 dollars a month. This is significantly higher than the average salary, but much lower than engineers in other countries.
