the next
outch
dude finished the stage then dropped out with a broken knee
those skinny little twigs are tough bastards
(as a side note.. i coulda sworn i crashed over that wall too... but mine was in the ardennes so i guess it cant have been.... putting little walls like that next to big drops is really bad for cyclists...)

7-10 feet
my news reports it as a few meters.. going by the trees im putting it at about 10 ft
much more than that and he’d have to be seriously lucky to limp away from that (pretty lucky as is)

There were suggestions of 3 to 4 metres...but it probably wasn't vertical so he probably only went down a metre or two before hitting the ground and rolling a lot further.

Wait, w
hat happened? Looks like his foot slips off of the pedal about one frame before he loses control.

I saw that on the tv as it happened...I thought he was a goner but he's clearly ridden that horse before as he tried to grab the top of the wall as he left the bike. Despite the busted knee...he's lucky. That descent has killed a TdF rider before.

picked the wrong line.
pretty sure the foot coming of the pedal was intentional in the hopes of being able to slide the rear wheel out and still stay upright
just had to much speed to pull it off

Way off line, realized he was boned and locked the brakes in a desperate attempt to not go over the wall.

Should have dragged a knee. You can lean over way farther than you think you can.

maybe.... tbh.. i think if hed dragged the knee he would have still hit the wall... just nearer to the end of the turn... and with a lot more speed
dude fucked up his entry pretty bad... not sure there was any saving that
but i could be wrong

1995 I think. There’s a memorial to him just a few kilometres further down from where Gilbert went over the wall.

If he’d dragged his left knee or even thigh then he’d have been out of the race even if he hadn’t gone over the wall.
The road rash resulting from using meat as a brake pad to get down from 40 km/h to zero would’ve been epic.
