Saving just recommends and adds it to your profile as a recommend/save and shows up as a recommend to the user who posted it.

i.e. please recommend (save) my post :)

I sent them an e-mail too. Nothing has been announced as an intentional change, so I’m assuming that it’s a bug.

It has to be. There have been some long articles that I have indeed wanted to save for later, so I’m not against this feature. Unfortunately, it appears to have completely overwritten or obscured the entire recommendation function, and getting rid of that just doesn’t make sense.

I’m pretty sure it’s the same thing as recommend/star was, just with a different icon. They show up on your profile, which I think they did before, too
