I’ve made it a habit of talking to Tesla owners whenever I get a chance, and one thing I have always noticed, is not one of them has dodged the question when asked about quality/reliability. So far, out of the 10 or so that I’ve had the chance to ask, not a single one of them have any major complaints of things going wrong. Yeah, some have listed some small things that have went wrong, but I’ve never had internet Tesla owner “This car is awful” syndrome. Could it be that the few that have had actual reliability issues(not qc issues) are just the incredibly loud minority?
The car that sparked this thought:
The paint isn’t faded, it’s a wrap because the owner got tired of cleaning the black original color.
It’s an earlier build 2013 P85 nearing 100k miles, and other than one window regulator that just went this week, it’s had zero issues. The owner and his wife like it so much, his wife now has a Model 3.

I get the same response from every late model VW/Audi owner I meet, too ;)
The minority of problems — and the negative media reports — always tend to speak a louder message than the joy and passion of the owner base can convey.
I still don’t trust the Model 3, though.

Oh the Model 3 is hideous. I also told this to that Model S’s owner before he told me he had one... I stood my ground.

That’s when you say something like “Well...good for you!” with as much feigned enthusiasm as possible.
Basically “bless your heart” but less condescending.

I told him I’m sure it was a great car to own, but it’s poorly proportioned. He agreed that it was definitely a love it or hate it deal on the looks.

I’m not a follower of Tesla news at all, so take this with a grain of salt, but I don’t think unreliability has been one of Tesla’s faults.
I’d also say that the kind of person that would bring their car to C&C is probably never going to be in the “this car is awful” camp.

Yeah, but usually they are honest about what has went wrong.

I don’t think Tesla really has a reputation for unreliability, more fit & finish and materials issues.

But I literally haven’t had an issue on any of my Golfs, and obviously, anecdotal evidence shall be taken as the almighty truth.
And we should ignore the fact that I was trained by VW and therefore do preventative maintenance.

My sample size on this is one; so I wouldn’t call it definitive by any means.
I know someone that had a Model S. He had a few minor issues with it but nothing major. He replaced it with a model X. He has had several issues with the center stack resetting itself and being unusable for brief times. He also rejected the first model X they sent him due to fit and finish issues. He has no doubt it’ll be replaced with another Tesla and is very happy with the X in spite of the screen issues.

Glad to hear it-
I’ve seen two model3 in Chicago already. I’m not entirely keen on the look, but I did place a reservation about a month after launch. I’ve got the invite to order now but no way I can afford the higher range model, have to wait until the lower trim launches next year sometime.
