I suddenly have a need to drive or at least ride in a car with a Lenco transmission.
Watch this guy grab second with the wheels in air. Looks fun.
Head phone warning!

I’ve always wondered what it’d be like driving with that transmission and shifting on the street.

This is a great way to wake up!

It can't be fun on the street but I've seen it done.

Dodge Colt GTS with the twin stick will get you close.

Well, off you go to You T ube.
The answer is, not a lot of fun unless you like repeatedly pushing and pulling levers and changing the fluid in each of the gearboxes frequently.

Each lever is heavy, too. I think the detents are something like 35 lbs each.

Ok, that’s a pretty serious pull for a shifter.

Add in that they aren’t *really* designed to downshift, and you’ll be pretty busy on the street.
Honestly I think there’s some bucks out there to somebody who comes up with a planetary-style shifter for some of the modern autos out there. If we can do flappy paddles we can do planetary.

It’s been done before, the Hurst Olds had a Lenco style shifter for it’s 3 speed auto.
But I like where your head’s at.

Right, the lightning rods were a thing , but as I recall the transmissions these were connected to (and really all of that era) were not really made to downshift like this. Even MVB cars are warned not to throw it in N at the end of a dragstrip run as you can overspeed some components.

On the Lenco, think it would be safer to clutch in on the downshifts? It’d be a bit annoying, but not that odd for a manual transmission.

I'll take that over the Hurst olds twin stick.

Maybe one of the more famous Lenco cars of recent memory. Larry Larson’s Nova. At one time it was the fastest street car in the world. Has run a 6.95 et. This was in Australia and not quite a full 1/4 mile pull:

Sweet with a passenger too. I think I remember this car. Doesn't he run a s10 now.

He does. Still has this car though and drives it frequently. He was in Australia where the rules are a little more relaxed about taking a passenger.

My parents had one of those when I was a kid. Never realized how unusual that setup was until years later.
