I’m impressed. Have they finally come back down in price, or are they still more than they cost 18 months ago?

Things are getting reasonable. Not back to their 2017 lows, but at least the 1070 can now be found for under $400 again. And there are some very good deals around on cards on sale. I’ve recently seen (don’t remember if these were prime day or something else) a Radeon RX 580 for $200, and a 560 for $110, both of which are excellent cards if you can find them for those prices (560 is a bit on the weak side, but still serviceable ) .

What did you get?

a 4 gig RX560, I didn’t want to get anything too expensive because the rest of my build is so outdated it probably won’t be long before i upgrade the whole thing.

GPU makers are small fry compared to the real money in computer memory. You know, Samsung et al who are terminally short on stock for cell phones and all the other appliances we lust after only to discard.

Discrete GPU pricing is slowly going to come down after record profits and a quashed attempt to artificially keep supplies low. RAM on the other hand, if you thought DDR4 prices were consumer friendly wait till you get a load of soon to be released DDR5, is going to be worth more than it’s weight in several rare or illicit substances combined.

That’s a perfectly good card. I mean obviously there are more powerful things out there, but it should be capable of playing any modern game at reasonable resolution and detail. There was a passively cooled RX 460, and if XFX had made a 560 version (or indeed still sold the 460), I’d probably get one to upgrade the Radeon 4670 in my HTPC:

Unfortunately they don’t, and aside from a couple that are too tall for my application, no one seems to be making passive coolers these days. My 4670 has a Zalman  VNF100, but those are no longer made:

Nice!  I'm running an 8gig rx580 in mine. I dig the current generation of AMD cards.

Ugh. I’ve been on DDR3 because the cost of RAM is close to the cost of a new CPU.

Guessing it’s not the 9-series intels that will require DDR5 yet?

Holiday season, or shortly thereafter, GPU will ship with G DDR6 and what should start with laptop processors will begin using DDR5 RAM. I say laptop because they are the releases being held back by Intel.

This Summer I decided the i5-2400 system I’d been using forever wasn’t going to be easily sellable for long. Once it sold  my plan was to find a cheap pre-made with an i5-4590 or even as new as a 7th gen. Ended up buying a retail i5-8400 and putting together a new mATX system. RAM felt like it doubled the price and I only got half what I realistically needed.

Yeah.  Youch.  I guess I’ll just keep my 4770k for a while longer.  Just feels so old....
