I really don’t think the whole “politics are okay as long as you add a spoiler” policy is working. I think political threads should be moved entirely to Cigar Lounge. I’m all for off-topic on Oppositelock, and I’m all for (reasonable) political discussion, but I don’t think this is the place for it.

I don’t touch political posts for this reason . At the end of the day, we are all here because of our love of all things wheeled. For any political post p eople are going to have opinions and people are going to get their feeling hurt and get all “somebody is wrong on the internet” with it. I love this place too. It’s a place to get away from the drain and suffering that is everyday life. We have fun here. We have knowledge here. We have silliness here. With what’s going down as far as Univision goes, we may n ot have a here much longer, and that’s going to make me sad. Let’s not ruin whatever time we do have left if it is indeed limited by dragging each other down over political arguments.

I actually enjoyed some of his posts, I felt like it gave me a view into a world I wouldn’t have otherwise seen. I also think that as long as it’s all civil (which all of his posts were), it’s not too difficult to just keep scrolling.

However, I think if we could have a poll or something to see where everyone stands on the political posts, and if most people hate them, then the rules should be changed.

I really don’t like telling anyone they can’t post something here. While I think it would be a good idea to hold off on political posts for a bit, p olitics do work their way into our lives in profound ways. Politics kept me from being able to volunteer for the military, from being able to adopt, and from being able to marry for a large portion of my life. Having this place as an outlet towards the end of those prohibitions was immensely helpful in my life. And I've had meaningful discussions with people on both sides of the issue here. That's important. I think a cooling off period would help right now, but we have to be able to talk to each other about these things or we're doomed.

The rules explicitly allow political discussions:

Political / Sensitive topics are welcome, even encouraged, however it is recommended that you announce such content in the title and that all sensitive material is posted “after the jump.”

That said, rule #1 is “ Be Excellent To Each Other ”, and that line was definitely crossed (probably more than once) today.

I have sensed a distinct lack of rolling with the punches, what I felt were absurd statements divergent, if not contrary, enough to only be founded in good humor, and unleashing anything from a pouty reaction up to a largess of pent up rage.

The politicos could do well to seek other outlets, but the life updates about every breath breathed/edible consumed/feeling emoted/personal and professional happening/personal pets/futbol/... None of which are innately entertaining as they slowly drag on the quality content here.

I really don’t like the idea of banning political posts. Politics are important, and have a huge impact on our everyday lives. Oppo has always welcomed off-topic discussions, and should continue to do so. And too be frank, on-topic and off-topic is frequently not a clear line anyway. Even if you wanted to make Oppo exclusively car stuff, there are a lot of interactions with politics (safety and emission regulation, global trade policies, unions, environmental concerns, consumer protection, fuel taxes, infrastructure spending, alternative fuel subsidies, transit, and many more I am no doubt forgetting).

That said, even on issues where people feel passionately, being part of the community requires that we do it without resorting to insults and name calling. If people can’t do that, then I think letting moderators do their thing is better than just shutting things down in general, or shoving them off to the side.

Its not like there weren’t a ton of posts about the US election. If you aren’t interested there’s no need to read them. Oppo is, and has been a very noisy site, with plenty of posts of highly varying quality and interest to go around. There’s no reason it needs to be shaped to the interest of any one user.

I bailed on social media because of politics. Politics brings out the absolute worst in most people. I know it has for me. I truly enjoy a spirited discussion with an opposing viewpoint, but most of the time it’s a wormhole of frustration and potentially anger. Nobody on the internet is going to change my mind, and I now know I won’t be changing some complete stranger’s mind with a few keystrokes. I came here because I love cars and trucks and vroomy things, so I never even click on political posts. Trump is a maniac, Hillary would have been just as bad, Bernie is a fraud. I’m a hard-right evangelical Christian who used to judge Drag Queen Bingo every Wednesday night with my gay friends. I love Teddy Prendergast, Marvin Gaye and I rule the pit at hardcore shows. I think I’m pretty cool with everybody, and internet politics is the best way to make a mess of that, so I don’t. Just don’t!
