Pretty rare to see a catastrophic structural failure in a building anymore. Somebody is getting sued... hard.

I had (have) a claim of a total collapse of a community centre (gymnasium etc).

Luckily everyone got out when they heard the building groaning.  I would have shit my pants

The DROs must be shitting their pants at the moment (Constructio n Responsibility Director)

Specially such a large, new building this is rare . But Artz has been plagued with design faults and setbacks from the beginning. I wonder if this will affect other projects like Antara Polanco; maybe SEDUVI will start taking the business of checking blueprints more seriously.

On another note. The company in charge of the Structural Engineering is Grupo Rioboo. The same people that built the elevated ringroad and were awarded billions of pesos of public money to build it by Mexico’s current President Elect.

It’s a strange failure mode. Structural review isn’t typically something done by the city (at least in the US) so I’d imagine the structural engineering firm and the contractor are the two parties where the blame could end up.

It depends. I mean, when the school collapse happened during the earthquake blame was being shifted around because the structure that caused the collapse was illegal (I mean, who the fuck builds a house atop an auditorium roof with a GAS TANK on it?) it was up to the local borough government to make sure the structure was legal.

However, in this case since it’s a public plaza, legally they’re bound to have a structural security review every 5 years or after a mayor seismic event. There’s actually an entire chapter of the Mexico City Building Code that details how buildings must be made to withstand earthquakes. If that thing was failing under normal conditions, in an earthquake it would’ve been devastating .

From the article it’s been slowly collapsing for years....I am sure the lawsuits are already in progress.

I’m no engineer, but what I do know tells me that neither are architects.

I’m gonna refer this to my BIL the structural engineer and see if he’s heard of this.

That’s why we hire structural engineers

LOL As casual as “obligatory” comes across, the truth is that this clip never gets old (for me, at least). Just watching it again, I lost it about halfway through. Pure genius , that skit .

It’s like a Comedy Central skit but better done than most Comedy Central efforts.

Yikes. Am I correct in seeing that this had a “green” roof with lots of soil and greenery? That stuff’s... heavy.

Yes, but that’s typically designed for. I’m more concerned by the fact that it just completely disintegrated and there’s seemingly no surviving structure.
