Definitely rare, but is it good? With the auto trans I’d guess not

My first new car was one of these, but a 1990 5-speed. It was a hell of a lot of fun when it ran right, which wasn’t all that often.

If you consider head gaskets and turbochargers to be ‘maintenance items’, then go for it - otherwise just stay the hell away.

It’s not impossible, but I don’t foresee any version of the Sunbird achieving an inflation-adjusted value of >$40k in some future year. (*cough, virtually any R-code ‘63, cough*). And even if it did, I don’t think there would be enough $10k survivors to pay off the tooling costs for runs of parts . Heck, there probably aren’t too many more Sunbirds than Galaxies *now*, if there are more at all.

Granted a lot of common-platform parts on the Sunbird will remain available for years to come, but repro dash knob bezels in another 30 years? Headliners? Seat covers? Radiator? Replacement armrest? Under supply chains anything like the ones now? No. Fucking. Way.

Anyway, the collector monkeys have made it so that a $1500 car that’s 55 years old is in a lot of ways better supported than a range of 20 year old cars, and consistently cheaper. Fucked up, but I can’t complain, can I?

I can’t either. I can shop for trim pieces for my 47 year old car all over the web. Fenders? Quarters? Entire floor pans? No problem! For a car that I bought for $800 and is maybe worth $7k now. My daily driver is 12 years old and I can’t get a replacement sunglasses holder for it.

The never-to-be-seen-again level of physical simplicity helps. The impediment to some mad bastard tooling up to make Part X, run 1500 pieces, and make a profit is pretty small.

Bought mine in ~ June of 1990 with 0 miles. Sold it in ~June 1995 with about 55k. 4 turbos, 2 headgaskets.

Subarus aren’t that bad.

My best friend growing up had the convertible bug, same as me. I redid my dad’s 66 Bonneville convertible. His mom and dad bought him this new from the dealership my dad managed when he was in college and needed a car. It was actually awesome! Much nicer than my ratty car, with ac and didn’t leak. I’m gonna say it’s a bit CP with the ratty paint, but for 2k if it was local I would take it for the nostalgia and enjoy it . Spent many trips to the jersey shore in the passenger seat of one of these.

Side note, my best friend was in Air Force rotc. He became a fighter pilot and bought the starter kit in 1990. Mustang gt with green and silver paint job and a white top and interior. Wish he still had that.
