If I know anything about football, the Lions always lose in the playoffs.

I’m hoping Croatia pulls this one off, no one likes watching teams who are supposed to win, win.

I dunno. Wasn’t that supposed to happen a generation ago when all those kids who played soccer in grade school grew up?

TBF it is increasing in popularity. attendance at MLS games seems to be fairly robust at least in some regions.
people saying things like you describe were just Euro-worshiping wannabes who were butthurt that soccer didn’t displace every other north American sport overnight.

I was rolling my eyes as I wrote that. Soccer is gaining over what it was when I was a kid, but it’s not woven into our cultural DNA the way it is with other places. It will take a long time.
My sport of choice is cycling, specifically road racing. That’s still largely a European dominated thing. But, the kids who grew up watching 7 -Eleven and then Greg Lemond, the Coors Classic, etc. became the riders of the Lance Armstrong generation, who became fixtures of the peloton. Now, the kids who watched Armstrong, et al., are the ones who making names for themselves in the peloton. Americans are a big part of the sport now, and high-powered US-based teams like BMC, who just won the TdF team time trial, are not an oddity. But after all these years, it’s still not a US-dominated sport and probably never will be.
