Honestly Land Rover: For a Few Dollars More is super appropriate.

FaFDM is seriously underrated, and La Resa Dei Conti is one of my favorite pieces that Morricone did.

TGTBTU is definitely more outright *fun* than the other two, and it has some grand-scale story thoughtfulness about greed. The main characters aren’t the moral ethos their name implies - they’re more that *facet* of greed. Throw in the desert scenes and Tuco’s problems at home, and the bridge scene (“sure, you guys are greedy, but that has a point . War often doesn’t”) and it’s the strongest overall.

FAFDM has some really good stuff, though - less “fighting” between Eastwood and Van Cleef, more competition, so more time one-on-one on screen. Works well. That, and how it’s really Col. Mortimer’s story, as seen by Manco. There’s some really emotionally wrenching stuff in there with the whole past-his-prime, one-final-mission of vengeance thing .

For the record I think Col. Mortimer is the career defining role of Lee Van Cleef (J ersey represent!), and seriously- I LOVE For a Few Dollars More. But damn if The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is one of the few absolutely perfect movies.

Truth. Both accounts. On a semi-related note, it amazes me how many people think the man with no name trilogy can’t be arranged into a single narrative. TGTB&TU: Man early in career as gunman and bounty hunter gets some education about picking his battles, strikes it rich, *and gets a serape* during the war. FOD: Man with serape looking for work well after the war tries to “play it smart”, it backfires, his hand is crushed, but he has his revenge. FAFDM: Man with serape and scarred hand engages in bounty hunting as a competitive sport, finds competition, but realizes some things are more important than winning.

“But he has a different name in all of them!” - idiots. No, he has nicknames. Blondie for his complexion and hair (as Tuco sees him), Joe as a nondescript Anglo nickname in a M exican struggle, and Ma nco (or “cripple”) for his injured hand.

Admittedly, Leone liked to recast people in different roles even within the Dollars trilogy (and considered Clint for the role of Harmonica), but I’m pretty sure it’s the same dude, dude. Kind of like how Roy Rogers was always Roy Rogers no matter who Gabby Hayes was, and I think even he had some sequels.
