HR-V: nice. I really like the interior design. touch screen everything, and cameras for when turning and all the bells and whistles. The way the rear seats fold is legitimately impressive.

Kinja'd!!!

but, I’ve ruled it out. Too much car, and too similar to the wife’s CR-V. We don’t need a second AWD bigger car.

Fit:Not as nice interior, but still all the bells and whistles, turny cameras and such. The rear seats are the same magical design and interior space is downright impressive.

*note: the white one was trapped so I test drove a dark grey one, with black interior. Its ~100deg today and EVERY warning light came on and the A/C stopped working. All them bells and whistles... ERROR!!!!

Kinja'd!!!

but, they’re pricey new. And the last generation doesn’t feel worth the money for what you get. Additionally Mrs Puzzle thinks they are ugly

Yaris: Just enough bells/whistles. Basic, but not roll your own windows basic. Drives better/nimbly-er than the Fit. And the latest model is 2015-2018 so there are quite a few to be had with the current spec for very cheap.

Kinja'd!!!

This is my current front runner.

Ford: I went to the place, and saw these pretties outside :D

Kinja'd!!!

then... I waited... and waited... and WAITED for a salesman to be intersted in attempting to convince me to buy things. While I waited I touched every button that this one had

Kinja'd!!!

Chrome red wheels... interesting pre-sale choice. FINALLY a salesman came to service me

Fiesta: these are bad.

Kinja'd!!!

Fiesta, it means party. But it’s more like the day after the party. Your mouth is fuzzy, and you regret some of the political discussions you were adamantly involved in. So for the Fiesta it’s

Kinja'd!!!

In conclusio n: I want a Yaris now.

Bonus: look, a customer’s TL-S that was visible in that horrific Fiesta pic

The front bumper on that TL-S just looks wrong.

They look so good stock, why did someone ruin it?

See if you can find a Corolla hatch. I’m interested to see how those stack up.

To be fair, I wouldn’t pay even close to mrsp either. This one was only $6500 all in, clean title still under powertrain warranty

That’s why we test drive cars, you never know until trying them. I had a 2005 Corolla which I really liked the size and lightweightness of. I’m sure the Yaris is similar in that regard. Are you thinking hatchback or sedan?

Kinja'd!!! MonkeePuzzle > Captain of the Enterprise

100% hatchback.

and yeah, I’ve read all the specs and details online. but you can’t really tell how the interior feels, and what visibility it like, and how it accelerates and turns without actually going out on a lunch break and actually sitting in them.

Manager special!

So funny how you can start out doing the research and thinking you want certain things, and then you get out on the lots and end up with something very different.

May I suggest the Sonic? It’s on its last legs so deals should be had and they haven’t changed drastically through the years so used should be similar spec to new.

Oh dear god is that what the Fit looks like now? It has grown into a monster! It looks like a tiny mini-van!

If you’re looking at little-ish hatchbacks, as much as it pains me to say it, you might want to look at a Golf/ GTI.  Also the Koreans are pumping out some excellent value for money cars these days.

yeah. for sure I thought i wanted a F it, and had heard nothing but bad reviews of the Yaris.

And the manager’s special is becuase pretty much all of them have some very minimal hail damage for a storm that rolled through a couple weeks ago

I have considered the Golf, but cost of ownership seems higher, and they are holding value better than the others so its 6 years old before they fall to the same sort of price range as the others at ~3 years old.

I’m not keen on the Kia/Hyundai range, just becuase of how alarmingly quickly they are losing value. The used market is SCARY cheap. Which means either they are garbage, or they are still suffering from decades of brand prejudice. Either way, not ideal as I don’t think I’ll have this car until the end of time, so resale is somewhat a factor.

yurg... I’ll throw my own prejudice in the ring here, I’m not keen on a Chevy. Maybe for a truck, but their small cars seem to be very cheap feeling.

I used to be in the same boat. Then, VW added a 6yr warranty to all of its 2018 cars. I promptly bought a new Golf. I around $4000 off. For a base model, that drops the price from $22k to $18k. It's a lot of car for the price. I cross shopped the 3-series and C-class, and I preferred the Golf.

Reasonable. Yes, they are basically disposable . I have a couple of friends that have bought Korean in the last couple of years and been happy overall. But yeah, the used market on them is brutal. I guess CPO or used with extended warranty is a possibility, but I see your point.

Have you looked at the Civic liftback?  Not quite a hatchback, but pretty close.

Yup. The Fiesta is better than the OP is giving it credit for. And Fiestas seem to depreciate a lot, so the used ones are a bargain!

yeah. it’s well into the next price point above the Fit. For the same/similar money I’d pick the HR-V over the current generation of civic which I dont like the look of.

Nah, I have a Fiesta, and if it weren’t for it being an ST, I’d regret every minute of it. It’s a dreadful car in a lot of ways.

The only Fiesta worth having is the ST.

this would seem to be truth.

well, I guess if the base Fiesta was at the right price it’d be worth it. But it’s clear that the price level that I think it fits in the market would be a serious loss for Ford.

You don’t want a Yaris...honest. I am someone who likes old simple Japanese econoboxes and I fucking hated driving those more than 5 minutes at work. The only worse car I’ve been in was a Chevy Aveo.

and a low mileage late less than 10 yrs old  aveo can be had for less than $2k these days. That’s some crazy loss in value.

Discount is discount.

Just make sure you do a series where you  park your new Yaris next to any big-grilled Lexus you can find, especially an LC.

My guess is that you want a manual? If its automatic you can check out the Nissan Versa Note, it’s basically a cheaper Fit but even more simple. You can get it with a manual but then you don’t get power windows.

The facelift gets you an uglier face, fake cvt shifts and bigger cupholders if that’s your thing.

Haven’t sat in a new generation Fit but the Chevy is on par with what Toyota puts out from an interior materials perspective. I personally like the interior styling of the Sonic more than the Yaris but it’s hard to compare to the Fit since the Sonic never went through a  redesign since it was put on the market unlike the Fit.

My mom has one and has not given any problems in 30k miles. F rom 2015 you get a nicer looking interior and different mirrors than the early ones.
A s far as c ons: the seats are quite narrow, the interior is all hard touch (doesn’t rattle  though), some people have issues with the cvt . P ros: huge back seat , it’s able to do over 40 mpg if you are light with the gas pedal, engine itself is reliable, small trunk compared to the fit (it s about the same with the seats folded).

Still $2k too much, in my opinion. Whatever you’re paying for an Aveo, you could get something better for the price.

I hate the Versa much  less than the Yaris. The steering is totally numb but they seem able to take turns at much higher speeds than they should (like, 10 mp h hairpins leaving Mesa Verde at 40+ with a coffee in one hand and the steering wheel and half a pop tart in the other). In the Fiat, next to a cliff, it would feel life-threatening, but totally no big deal in the Versa. And this was a rental with bald tires.

I can’t remember if it’s the hatch or the sedan, but one or the other had issues with the fenders just popping off. Plastic clips breaking, or something. They might’ve fixed it by now though.

It’s built pretty horribly, and the cooling system is completely inadequate from the factory. While they acknowledge the latter, they are only recalling certain cars that they have to. On top of that, the seats are too high. I’m not super tall(6’), and I am at the height limit I feel like, which wouldn’t be an issue if the seats were a couple of inches lower.
