Neighbor across the street came home with a brand new Ascent Limited. I know I am a fanboy, but I think Subaru hit it out of the park with this thing. Yes the styling is just puffed up Outback but it is handsome and the size is great. Packaging is also very clever. I want one. It reminds me a lot of the 2nd generation Santa Fe that I had and always loved the size of. I don’t really need a 3rd row, but I do often find myself missing the extra cargo space that 3-row vehicles have with the third row folded or removed. Many of the 3-row crossovers have grown into boats over the past decade as manufacturers have been trying to make the 3rd row seats more habitable. That’s fine if you need to transport people regularly, but for occasional use I’d rather have something more compact. This seems to fit the bill nicely. Speaking of which, my Outback still needs to get its explody Tamara airbag replaced... looks like I have an excuse to go to the dealer and test drive one of these to see what the new 2.4L turbo feels like!

This would be a good fit for me as well. We only use the 3rd row on either of out vehicles occasionally but when you need it...you need it. The GX is awesome but it sucks gas and the packaging isn’t ideal. Maybe in 3-4 years we’ll be looking at these...by then we’ll know how much extra engine oil to buy to be ready...

Agree on the third row thing. We rarely use ours in the minivan, but the cargo space created by a 3-across rear seat is fantastic. To a lesser degree, same with crossovers.
Though many two-row crossovers have far more rear storage than 3-rows because of the cube of the folded seat.
I was just shocked to learn the Mercedes ML/GLE didn’t have a third row. Seems like they never jumped on that bandwagon.

Last week we moved out of our old house and drove 800 miles to the new one. I’m very glad I’m used to bringing a quart of 0W20 with me because the low oil light came on somewhere in the middle of nowhere in West Texas. Also the transmission overheated twice but that was my fault and a post for another time. The Ascent motor is a new design so maybe they’ve solved it. But it’s Subaru so probably now. I’ve always thought the swing open tailgate on the GX would be awesome. How is it to live with?

It’s my 2nd side swi ng Toyota. Im Over it. Is all pros and cons with any door but the single side swing is mostly cons. I don’t hate it, it creates a huge opening and there is a low and easy load height... I guess it also is a great wind break if you park it right. Other than that a lift gate is generally better and split gate is best gate

This is the mistake Toyota made with the rx350

To be fair, headless people don’t need comfort.
But yeah, the leap from there to the GX (or Merc GL) always seemed to big to me.

People with heads, it turns out, don’t need aesthetics either

If it weren’t for the badge, I wouldn’t recognize it as a Subaru.
Subaru design for the last few years has been extremely boring and vague. It’s unfortunate that they chose to reinforce this for their new flagship. Then again, B9 Tribeca was too unusual in its styling. •shrug•

The Tribeca was a weird one though - wasn’t it supposed to be a Saab until GM pilled the plug?
![]() 07/08/2018 at 15:06 |

Maybe? If so,
I think Saab was supposed to get a
version to slot above the 9-4x (SRX twin) and below the 9-7x (Trailblazer twin), hence why the 9-2x (“Saabaru”) was a thing. The original B9 Tribeca
was definitely weird. It had some neat things going for it, but the airplane-inspired shnozz did it zero favors, and the Nissan Quest-emulating curved dashboard was also a mess. It made it roomy, sure, but it was very strange.

Maybe I should have waited for this thing to hit the market instead of selling the Tribeca to buy a Peugeot.

It looks like a big CRV. It's just so okay. Maroon is a nice color though.

Are they going to be selling it down there?

Agreed on the very strange. I found some photos. Was supposed to be either a 9-6 or 9-6X depending on the source. The way I understand it, some of the strangeness was that it was being developed all along to be both a Subaru and a Saab. Subaru grafted their corporate face onto their version. Just as it was coming out GM sold their stake in Subaru and the Saab version was axed. Saab ended up using some of the parts like the headlights, tail lamps and hatch sheet metal that had been developed for the Saab version on the facelifted Tribeca.

Subaru dealers are saying that it’s going to arrive Q2 next year.

That’s quite a wait and that’s Peugeot is pretty nice.

Also, a 7 seater SUV is probably going to cost a lot more than the $ 42k I paid for the Pug.

Likely so. Any word on motor choices on the Ascent for Brazil? Here is just gets a 2.4L gas turbo. I thought - maybe wrongly so please correct me if I am - that most things down there were ethanol, diesel, or smaller gas engines.

It peaked with the first and second gen. With few exceptions (eg current Camry), 10-year-old Toyota is Best Toyota.

It depends on the model, the higher tier cars usually are only available with the more powerful larger engines, and Diesels are only allowed on utility vehicles coupled with 4X4.
Are there other engines available in the Ascent?

In the USA it is a new 2.4L turbo as the only option no matter what trim level.
