Gonna be sad to see those big jumbos disappear in the next couple of  decades but you can't go against market evolution.

Yo, A380, yo business plan so flawed, it banked on long-term oil nation profits coinciding with increased demand for 500-pax long haul transcontinental tourism! *holds hand to brow and looks around*

OHHHH!!!

Aight, aight....747, yo prototype so old....it’s so old, it’s hanging in the Smithsonian — MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY!!

DAAAAAYYUUM!

/end slamfest

Not gonna miss them. They represent everything that is wrong with aviation: A focus on corporate profits rather than consumer convenience, and they were kept alive by outdated laws, like ETOPS.

Hub and spoke basically means “You know, We’re gonna make you fly to a huge airport on a shitty small jet against your will, so that we can have you sit about with shitty wifi and shitty, overpriced food for two hours, so that it takes 45 minutes to board a huge jet that is really expensive to fly in.”
It also means “Oh, I did not know Charleston’s Metropolitan area has 700,000 people!, Well fuck all of them! if you want to fly to LA, go through fucking Atlanta with a billion tourists that lost their flights !”

I recognize that the 747 was a revolutionary jet when it came out, but even their chief engineer said that it was only a stepping stone into supersonic travel. the whole design of the 747 is based on the fact that it should be a cargo jet! The A380 is also pretty cool, but it’s like saying the best thing about New York is that 19 million people live in the Metropolitan area.

It is unfair to blame the 747 for the etops rules. You have to go back to the 50s to see the high rate of piston engine failures that would have made any regulator hesitant to start allowing jets to be ex emp t. For its time the 747 made sense.

the A 380 on the other hand is definitly a case of reading the future of a market wrong.

Oh, absolutely. But it’s undeniable that etops kept it alive for far too long.

But etops isn’t all bad. It gave us the tri jet and that’s good.

I try and book flights based on aircraft. I missed out when BA decided to cancel my a38- flight. but fingers crossed one day.

Nice!

Though I wish the 747 was adapted for two engine operations,  it’s still a bit more compact than some jets while offering good performance and capacity(ie you don’t need to fold the wings ona terminal like the 777x)
