so what actually happened? that link says it was cold then hot but that doesn’ t really make sense.

When it was cold, the crushed rock that was laid over the asphalt couldn’t sink or be pushed into it as would usually happen . So it had no structure or adhesion to the underlying road surface . So when it warmed up just enough ...the new surface came up like a layer cake.
