Both or them are idiots who don’t know jack shit. But divorce is probably worse because he devalues the entire profession of automotive repair because he literally sees no value in paying someone to do something he can do, but most people can’t and don’t want to do.

An oil change at a dealership on a Mercedes is not just changing the oil and filter you fucking idiot (talking to divorce). He's a hack and I wish he didn't have such a large audience eating up his terrible advice.

I had a customer bring a car in one time to diagnose a smog failure. He asked if I can do an oil change too. I said yeah. So I did the estimate and using the price for the right spec oil, a Toyota filter, and the proper labor time, I think it came out to $80. When he dropped the car off and I told him the price he asked why it was so much, and I responded with, “We don’t use cheap parts. We use the right oil, a genuine filter, and we choose not to lose money on an oil change.” “Oh. Well I’ll take it somewhere cheaper for the oil change.”

The tires on this particular car were completely bald. There was literally no tread left on it. Some customers.

Are you talking about a suspension lube on a newer car? Most newer vehicles don't even get a "suspension lube." There is nothing to lune and no way to even do it.

No, I’m not saying doing it yourself is devaluing what I do. I’m saying making videos proclaiming that ALL technicians do during a service is drain and fill the oil and replace the oil filter. I can distinctly remember a video of an SL he did where gets underneath, removes a pain, and takes the drain plug out and says that same thing would have cost him around $130 at a dealer.

But that’s not all technicians do. We also do inspections, and our time, tools, and expertise is worth something. But if you (general you, not specific you) don’t see any value in that and want to do it yourself there’s nothing wrong with that. But making videos constantly saying dealers and technicians are scam artists is just wrong.

When I had more free time I did my own oil changes, but now it’s worth it to have my mechanic do it, on the Subaru at least, especially since I have nowhere good to do it where I live, and the car is low enough that I’d need to jack it up. Plus I want to have a full service history for this one in case I wind up needing to sell it some day. It’s a 2006, I guess it most likely doesn’t have serviceable suspension components, but my truck definitely does and gets greased whenever it’s getting an oil change and any of that needs done.

The people who are confused about $90 services are the same people going to a janky Mr. Lube or similar whenever they remember that cars need oil.

I am confused about a $90 oil change. A filter is like $8 and a 5 qt jug of Castrol full synthetic is $22. Ramps are $40. Keep a maintenance log and make a note of the date and mileage of the oil change. Just my take on it, but the people who think it’s nuts to pay $90 for $30 worth of oil are correct.

Hell, my oil alone costs anywhere from $70-$120.... 12 liters worth. Filters are $10-20. But still small price to pay for something as important as an oil change.

But at least now I have a good extractor so I don’t even have to get under the car. Oil and filter out the top.

That’s what my boat takes and the filter is $35. I buy the oil in 5 gallon buckets. I have no idea what it would cost to have someone else do it. The thought never even occurred to me. The extractor makes it all very easy.

Alright I just checked my receipts. $75-85 or so for most of them. $40 labour, $6.50 filter, $20 synthetic oil. Add tax, there you go.
