Everyone remembers the Chevelle and the Corvette but the first-gen Monte had a SS 454 4-speed option!

When I was 8 or 10 years old, just getting into cars there was a black and red Monte SS like that for sale our side of a restaurant, and for some reason I was completely enamored by it. I thought t was the coolest thing ever

That one doesn’t get on the “things done right” list. That one goes on the “why GM didn’t deserve a bail out” list.

When I was a kid, my older sister had one of these. It had the swivel bucket seats, which she said were great when she’d had too much tequila.

yeah - never really was a fan of Monte Carlos, but the first gen is a really good looking car. Design is tight, hadn’t gotten too bloaty yet, didn’t immediately fall apart like the 1980's version...

Your wife’s car is a Camaro lookin’ like it’s ready to kick a Boxster in it’s smug, overpriced teeth. Helluva keeper you scored.

that goes on the “Amazing... You got every design choice on that car WRONG” list.

The last time Monte Carlo was brought up...
My parents had an 81 Monte Carlo when I was growing up. They had upgraded, and the Monte became the car I drove for the first year of having my driver’s license.
I bought a Mustang fastback less than a year later. The Monte was better than no transportation, but it wasn’t a whole lot more exciting than that. Balloon tires, and soft suspension, and a fair amount of weight for a carbureted early 80's 3.8 V6 to carry around... especially one that was more than 10 years old.
Plus it was similar to the pictured car, the same powder blue, but with a white vinyl landau top that the pictured car should be thankful not to have. Not even the dark-blue vinyl, but the 70's leisure suit white. Tragically un-cool.
If it had been a darker, nicer color, and a small block V8... especially if it had had T-tops, and a floor shift and bucket seats, rather than bench seat and column shift, I probably would have been a bit more enthused, as a teenager gear-head.
I struggle to actually LIKE GM products ever since... I am coming to terms with liking the Fiero as much as I do, appreciating the engineering of the Voltec 2 drivetrain engineering... and other aspects of GM from the 80s through today.
That white vinyl top is so rare, I can’t find pictures of a G-body Monte with one... only the dark blue, or earlier 70's cars with the white landau roof. For a reason.

Aero is best G body
That’s not what those are called, is it Euro? The aero is the one with the slanted rear glass for NASCAR homolgation

The worst part is I liked it back in 2002 or what ever. In my defense I was 12. I even sketched out an El Camino version once. I think the main attraction for me was that I came in yellow.

I can’t fault anyone for their formative automotive memories and preferences . If that is what was going on when you started to notice cars... then there is no fault with that, and no defense needed.
As I mentioned earlier, I was driving an 81 Monte when I was in high school, in the early 90s, in a tragically uncool color at the time... badly wishing that it were some other color, or a sportier variant, like a Grand Prix, or a Regal T-type/Grand National... even a Monte SS Aerocoupe, or an F-body, or anything other than what I had, with the formal roofline, and the aft-tapered fenders, the cloth bench seat, and handling like the QE2. (a big ocean ship)
I wanted something sportier and sleeker, so it kind of colored my judgement on Montes, and GM in general.
