Longbed!
Ripping it all out so we can start painting. New carpet coming this week. Rush rush rush!
The carpet may be four decades old. This is not for the squeamish...
Fools! You can never get upstairs again.
Stairs are a PITA to remove. Also, the colors children! The colors!
One room clearly had an animal locked inside for years. Scratch marks on the door and lots and lots and lots of urine. Poor little guy...
Final body count
More fun to come!

I like the convenient photo bomb from your truck.

wow fantastic. I hate wall to wall carpet! I mean, we have some and it’s nice . But old stuff is just nasty.

Place looks to be from maybe 1910. Is that beveled glass or just a reflection?

looks like he should throw the carpet out the window into the truck

The front door has beveled glass, everything else no.

Too late now, but...
PRO TIP: D ivide each room into manageable lengths and cut the carpet before pulling it. (For example, cut one line down the middle of a 12'x12' room, then pull the carpet , rolling it into two 6' long rolls for easy transport.) Duct tape the rolls to help keep them rolled up, if desired. Repeat with padding (may need to cut a fresh line).
If you have to carry the carpet around any tight corners th at are not getting a fresh coat of paint, this will help avoid scratching the walls up.

Ugh pulling staples is the worst

I feel so inadequate. I have zero chandeliers.

Yes, and these ones were thinner and sharper than any razorblade on earth

Original door? If so, don’t replace it.
If you want a real project, strip the white paint off the rest of the interior woodwork.

Multiple stories, so fancy...

Also, there's a dead fly in your chandelier.

I found one set of doors in the entire house that are the original wood package, no paint. Untouched by time because reasons. Another post...

You cant even post a carpet picture without sneaking a Toyota or Lexus in the pics hahah

Going off of the woodwork and windows alone, I love your new house.

They knew how to build ‘em. I spent part of my childhood in a big old “four square” house from 1910, with leaded glass, original lighting, built-ins, ample wood trim, a split staircase, etc. It was kind of like maintaining an old S-class, but my dad was into it.

Doctor, I’ve always preferred to keep the carpet in place for as long as possible while painting. There is a stress relief whenever I can royally fuck up some carpet without worry to clean it.
Ps: Kitchens and bathrooms add the most value. Spend money in these.
Pss: Why does it hurt when I pee? You’re a doctor. Tell me.
Psss: Just kidding, my gentlemen’s sausage is fine.

All the padding is still there. We need the carpet gone to paint the baseboard, which is huge and drops all the way to the subfloor.
Someday, but for now I’m not moving in with 40 year old carpet.

Thanks! It’s sad how many people have kind of been like, “Ew it’s old/it’s a lot of work/ugh ew ooh.” No imagination, or appreciation for how well homes used to be built.

When do we get a photo tour of the Craftsman charm?

This looks like such a fun project. I hope you have tons of other things to do as well!
Those upper panes are neat but such a pain to clean well

I seriously considered a gorgeous 1920s Tudor that needed quite a lot of love, but had so much beautiful woodwork and every window was leaded glass... I just couldn't make it work with my budget. It hurt to walk away from it knowing the eventual buyer would probably knock it down to build 2 hideous monstrosities on the lot.

20's?

Enjoy the process even though it’s a pain. We’ve done a full kitchen (removing a wall for an ‘open concept’), both bathrooms, added a pantry, tore out two full walls due to dry rot, on and on. About 80k of work.

I think we have a good candidate for a potential open floor concept. One wall separates the kitchen and living room, another separates the kitchen and dining room. I'm not sure I want to tear into it too much though...

1910's?

As long as it isn’t load bearing it can be done easily. Kitchen to living room is great. Dining room. Eh. Not that necessary.

Ad neither home will be well-built

Replace the carpet with grass, and live in tents inside.

I guess that depends on whether any of the previous owners have taken care of the knobs and tubes, lead pipes, etc. already.

Fair enough.
