I think the new m850i leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to design.
They got the profile right, maybe they could’ve made the shoulderline a bit lower and the grille of a reasonable size.
I think BMW is jumping into a “bangle butt” situation with their grille size. I know it’s a thing of all automakers right now, but this car must use 2/5ths of the vertical space available at the front for the grille, just to be beset by some non-functional air intakes.
It must’ve been a design risk and to me it wasn’t worth it. Lexus made a lot of design risks on the LC500 and those seem to have worked for me at least.

I think the problem for the front bumper is the distance from the ground to the lower lip. It’s too much and makes the car look like it has enormous wheels. If they made a more aggressive front bumper that was lower to the ground it would offset the enormous grille.

If you don’t like the 8 series Coupe, perhaps you’d like the 8 Series Gran Coupe?

the fact they’re platform-sharing, and pedestrian safety regulations probably point to that being a tad hard. But they got it
so well
with the old 6er I’m surprised they did this!
IMHO they could’ve made the entire bonnet a little bit lower, with a little bit more rake, maybe shorter, and then make the grille slimmer while also making the license plate holding area a tad wider for American plates.

Gah! it looks like the lovechild of an X6 and a Maserati Ghibli!

Just like it happens with the S-Class Coupe (I hate the AMG panamericana grill) the BMW and every big GT looks better in non-sport, more understated trim

Yes, I’m not a big fan of cutting huge holes in grilles just to fill them up with plastic (HA, said the Stinger owner) It does look a bit better but I feel like the grille shouldn’t be significantly wider than the headlamps.
About the rear, I think BMW could’ve made it a bit longer (wheelbase included) and that way it would avoid looking like an accord coupe!

Why is there a BMW grille on that Mustang?
![]() 06/20/2018 at 22:55 |

Yeah but if you can get your choice of the Ecoboost, NA V6, or 5.0, it gives you plenty of options. Hopefully they drop the Voodoo engine in it.
Oops, NM thought that was the new Mustang

Wow, that front end is hideous from that angle

You called?

The roofline honestly looks copied from a Mustang. That’s what I immediately thought.

Ur a goo log

Yes, too much fastback, they should’ve made the boot top a bit flatter and longer to accentuate it.

Was gonna say I hate to be the guy that says it looks like a Mustang, but I’m a bit late to the party because I was making this side by side.
I mean, come on.
I agree with the LC, but I am also very biased to Toyota. I would take the LC over the 8 series every time.

You sure those air intakes are non functional? BMW likes to put radiators behind those intakes.
![]() 06/20/2018 at 23:37 |

Me too, but in reality I’d take a 911 over either so yeah.

Those look filled in to me! and that’s on the 850i model, so it has the v8 with the turbos and shit.
Look at the pictures that Vitor posted; the non-m spec car has noticeably smaller side intakes, which would point to a large part of the lateral intakes being filled in plastic

What THE FUCK happened to the rear oh god I saw the front and thought “that’s almost handsome” but the rear is just ruined.

Ah yeah, I’d have a really hard time deciding between the 911 and LC. I think I’ve been drinking the Toyota kool-aid long enough that I would honestly pick the LC.

I like the sound of the v8, but the 911 to me still feels like the more elegant machine, but who knows what Porsche does to it with the 998.
I have a weird fascination with lexus because those aren’t sold here, I loved the is, and the LC’s interior is just fantastic.

IMO raising the top would have fixed it, as well as possibly tweaking the C pillar design to come down at a sharper angle.

Yes, BMW should be proud of their two door sedan past.
![]() 06/20/2018 at 23:46 |

They all look filled until you’re up close. My dad’s m235i had radiators behind them and it wasn’t an M car. I find it hard to believe they’s put extra radiators on a turbo straight six, but not a turbo V8.

Not only is the shape similar, but the 8-series is nearly identical in width and height. The wheelbase and length are just 3-4 inches longer which appears to have all been added between the back of the doors and the rear wheels to make the back seat in the BMW habitable.
![]() 06/20/2018 at 23:56 |

well, to be fair the center opening is much bigger than the m235i and so is the grille.
I looked at the pictures and I couldn’t tell. However, the 750i does have a functional one to the right as far as I can see.
I know it’s lazy to take the picture from my laptop but meh

I agree with that. The 911 just seems like it’s a level above the LC, despite the LC’s interior. I had no idea Lexus wasn’t sold in Mexico! I wonder why they do that. Can you import them?
My family actually has two of the boring variety!
The black one is my dad’s and the gray one is mine that used to be his. His is an ‘08 RX350 which has just over 135k miles on it. Mine’s an ‘04 that just crossed 240k miles yesterday! And yes they are equipped exactly the same. We’re very exciting people clearly.

I had no idea the dimensions were that close. That’s amazing. I’d love to see the two cars next to each other when the 8 Series hits the roads.
![]() 06/21/2018 at 00:06 |

I would as well. It will probably be a rare event, though because I can’t imagine BMW will sell all that many of these.

Very true. Maybe a cars and coffee somewhere can make it happen.

It looks so much like the current Mustang

It doesn’t “click” at first because of the radically different grill and rear taillight/fascia treatment, but once you put them side by side holy shit

BMW gib me back MEIN Mustang!! This imitation is not flattering.
