As probably few of you know, in some parts of Mexico it’s ilegal to dispatch your own gasoline, so you just sit in your car and the attending... um... dispatcher will do it for you. In most cases the machines are tampered with to give you less gasoline than advertised. But that’s not the point.
These dispatchers tend to work for tips, so if you ever cross over to Mexico make sure to tip them when you’re served gas. Most dispatchers tend to be quite nice and will offer to check your tire pressure, clean your windshield, so on and so forth.
Which is why I tip them even if they do things like this:
I know most cars can handle the dangling cap, but my car has paint as thin as Donald Trump’s skin and it gets scratched up on anything.
Please take care of your paint, and if you can server your own gas, put the gas cap on the holder!

Wait. You can’t pump your own gas in Mexico? Ever?
BUILD THE WALL!!!! (kidding)

Good thing New Jersey and Oregon aren’t border states or we’d have a much bigger labor crisis.

As far as I’ve been lead to understand, there’s a law that gas stations must have clerks attending. For #jobs or something. I’m pretty sure it’s for all of Mexico, but Esteve might want to pitch in with Norteño information.
Granted, I did not know until I stayed sat on a Spanish gas station waiting for some dude to pour me some gas. Then it was explained to me how it actually works.

We actually have that in Vancouver. One or two of the municipalities does that dumb shit. Just another reason not to visit that city.

Yes, I get it... I tend to be really finicky about gas, according to the owners manual I shouldn’t pump gas after the first click of the nozzle, but here in Mexico they pump until the third or fourth click.
I have to specifically tell them to stop at the first one and they look at me like some sort of pompous asshole.

The two US states with the same gas pumping policy as Mexico.

In Oregon it was also illegal to pump your own gas until very recently (I think about a year ago). I’ll guess New Jersey has the same kind of law.

OHHH, that make sense.
it’s a stupid policy in my honest opinion.

Or ... just buy a Ford ;)

Wow. I mean.
It is literally the only redeeming feature of any ford vehicle.
Though I can’t deny we cross shopped with the Fusion Sport.

This must not be the case in the North, because I’ve always pumped my own gas in Mexico. There was never any one at the station to pump gas for you. There were, however, no shortage of folks offering to wash windshields at any busy intersection.

Hmm, it seems like I was lied to!
Everywhere I’ve gone in Mexico, the gas is served for you, even if you try to do it on your own, it must be some sort of special northern state law (like not needing front license plates)

Admittedly, my Mexico experience is limited to only a few quick trips into Ciudad Juarez (and never bought gas there) and driving to the beach at Puerto Penasco a couple of times. We pumped our own gas in Puerto Penasco.

lol, I actually didn’t even know my car’s gas flap has a little holder for the gas cap until I saw a gas dispatcher use it.

Click? You mean when it stops automatically? If so, remind them that topping off the tank can damage the vapor recovery system on your car.

i can’t think of a petrol station here in Australia, that I’ve been to, that serves you
all the ones i’ve been to are self serve.

Nope, the keypad on the door so you can get into the car if you accidentally lock your keys in it; OR, more likely, ever take your car somewhere like, for a run, hike, swim, whatever and don’t want to take your keys with you.

All the stations that I’ve seen in Chih had attendants at the pumps.
