Some things that were farm related that I did today...
The flock, now augmented with 16 new Blue Faced Leicesters from Ohio...
I bought a running gear with a bent backbone tube that had already been patched, so I cut out the bent part and spliced it back together about 14-inches shorter than it was before...
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I then took this bare running gear and built a shitty round bale rack on it with green, fresh cut poplar and yellow birch. (I needed to clear the land anyway...)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I also bought and rehabbed a Ford 503 3pth rake. it mostly needed grease and paint and new draw-pins. I got it really cheap. The belts are in decent shape and the main bearings were replaced two years ago

whew. I’m tired. Also: green wood is really heavy. Gonna be sore tomorrow.

I’ve kind of wondered - why don’t local welding supply stores hold a Saturday “get tips on your welding” workshop, where they show a few hints/tips/tricks. I’d think it’d be an easy way to build some good customer relationships and sell a few things while doing so.
(If it were my welding job, I’m sure it’d be a lot uglier. As someone here on Oppo said - when you are learning to weld, black spray paint and and angle grinder will become your best friend. :P )

Unlike soldering where you can just apply a little heat to a cold solder and that pretty much instantaneously fixes it, welding isn’t the same...

This past weekend I had the chance to teach my kids the difference between bearings and bushings, what a zerk fitting is and how it’s used. What prompted the lesson was a flat tire on the little lawn trailer I inherited. I had to pull the wheel to re- seat the bead and when I did, I discovered that it’s rolling on bushings that have never been lubed. So, we went down to the store to get a grease gun and put the zerks to work for the first time.
It was greasy fun.

Because of liability, welding classes/workshops are generally relegated to makerspaces. I took one at the place I used to belong to and got pretty good with a mig welder (granted I was always using cleaned steel, any rust or paint can make things ugly real quick). One of the guys that was in charge of the metal shop was always busy welding on LeMons cars so that was cool to see.

Ah, right - liability. :(

We figured out who the owner was and he came and got them.
