AKA the “I’m getting too old for this” mod. For a road car it’s actually an improvement - the ride quality is miles better, the wheel/tire combo is 4-5 lbs lighter per corner, the tires are cheaper, and it’s easier to get the tail out.
Erm, scratch that last one.

Considering weight savings in the wheels/tires are worth about 8x static savings, 4.5lb*8=36lb*4 wheels=144lb, and that gaining 10hp and losing 100lb have about the same effect on performance... you effectively just gained 15hp. Or more accurately, freed up 15 newly-usable horsepower.
Win.

I did this with my C30 very soon after I bought it. 19 pound 17" wheels vs the 26 pound 18's it came with. I was able to run more sidewall which helps a lot when driving on crappy city streets.

I keep telling my dad to take the stock 18” (rare) OE wheels off his VW R32 and find a cooler, light 17”. Tires are marginally cheaper and less prone to damage, too. And the OE ones can be stored for eventual resale (of the car).

Ha, I have 14 inchers. The level of comfort you get with decent sidewall is incredible moving from my mom’s 3 series to my Golf.
