Was digging around above the drop ceiling in the ‘wood shop’ area of my basement, found two four light fixtures, two switches that do not appear to work, and now I think I know why:

Might be time to pull the ceiling down and re-do it... and maybe repurpose some of the fixtures with the long tube-style fluorescents to the garage where they’ll be more appreciated.

you may want to install a junction box

I was about to say exactly that. Previous owner mustvr been like “eh, who needs ‘em?”

Makes me wonder what other shortcuts were taken throughout the house. Yikes. Can’t wait to pull all that down and get itchy with insulation.

i believe there is no problem with using a junction box since this is accessible since it is a drop ceiling

I know what you mean.

Although this is my handy work and I’ll be putting a proper cover over thatbox next Time I’m over there to run wires for lights and switch.

Drywall ceilings are just a bad idea for basement living spaces. I wish he had a drop in tile ceiling.

For reference we are bumping that wall out that goes along his stairwell. It’s amazing how 1/2 assed stuff is done. Oh and adding built in bookshelves because Pinterest.

You found the joys of being a home owner?

That’s no good...no good at all.

Hacked in homeowner electrical is the worst. Also a fire hazard.

At least it had wire nuts. I had a similar situation in my old house. I was lifting weights one day and dropped a 25lb plate on the floor and the lights in the living room went out. I went downstairs and started poking at the wiring with a broom handle and found an overstuffed junction box with wires just twisted together. I poked at it and saw sparks. I eventually had almost the whole house rewired.

It’s like buying a modified used car with a few previous owners. But worse. And more expensive.

And also more dangerous.

At least my house can’t break and hurtle into a school bus full of kindergarteners at 80mph.

Hd a similar scenario in our house after we bought it. Had an electrician in to add a few lights (rooms without lights? I hate stick lamps!). Guy pulled me I to the attic to show me pretty much exactly what you have. “I can’t do anything until I fix all of this”. I agreed.

No, but electrical fires probably wouldn’t be good for you or your children.

Why people fuck with electrical stuff is beyond me. Replacing outlets is fine, probably, but anything beyond that is crazy.

Put some more tape on it, yeah that will fix it, said the previous owner.
