ffs you have a bicycle... its only rain leave me alone
(eta) my daughter had a phone wich she refused to take anywhere with her coz it was just a nokia brick.. and im refusing to buy her a smartphone till she proves she wont just lose it or break it every other week...we’re pretty much at a stalemate now (considering her ipad is practically held together by ducttape.. i feel pretty justified here... smartphones be pricey yo)

Huh...I’m glad I don’t have that problem.

You can get a $60-$80 smart phone, it’s the data plan that will cost you with a teen.

“You have used all your 15GB of data for this month. We will add 1GB of data for $15.”
Lather, rinse, repeat.

I’m jealous...only a couple texts a month

Yup. Thankfully for me if I go over 2GB it just gets slow. They hope you will call them and add more data but I lived through dial-up. I cannot be pushed mwahahaha!

I recently crunched the numbers for our family of 5 (my wife barely ever uses any data), and we actually come out ahead paying for the extra GB once or twice a month than we would by going up to a higher plan. What we really need is an 18GB plan, but of course, they don’t offer such a thing.

i’d be buying a pay as you go.. so no data plan.. but full price of phone up front.. and then however many top up vouchers it takes i guess
for the time being im on short term contracts.. so i avoid monthly expenses like the plague
![]() 04/25/2018 at 13:45 |

Sounds like a solid plan. I’m not on a contract, just month to month with T-Mobile and I buy my phones outright from Motorola been happy with both but their coverage doesn’t work everywhere

ah right... probably also should have added she’d most likely not take a cheapo smart phone anywhere either.... after all... gotta fit in with the rest of the girls....

I don’t envy you sir. I remember that feeling though. Damned rich kids and their mustangs and camaros and me with my Neon. But I payed for mine myself and took a lot of pride in that. Maybe a “save your allowance and you can buy whatever phone you want” scenario would work?
I’m not a parent so I might very well be talking out my ass here

That sounds like our old verizon family plan. Thankfully, Verizon has safety mode now, so you can’t go over on data. It claims to slow you down but I still watch youtube videos after my limit is hit.
![]() 04/25/2018 at 14:02 |

We’re on ATT. I can get a plan that gives us 20GB and throttle over that, but we still come out ahead if we can limit ourselves to 16-17GB/mo.
![]() 04/25/2018 at 14:04 |

Is it really slow when it’s throttled down? I dropped to 5g a month but I usually burn through that in a week, and then stay in safety mode for the rest of the month. I have yet to notice it being slower at all.

lol.... i understand how she feels.. but im not made of money....and she’s not exactly a careful girl.. (asides from breaking everything... she also tends to lose coats and shoes coz i dunno... i took em off somewhere) sooo... before i pay... she has some proving to do
and yeah.. plan was to save up for one herself... but she keeps getting distracted by shiney trinkets and make up.... being a girl and fitting in sounds difficult and pricey
(and apparently having no phone is cool in a quirky sort of way.. having a crappy one just means your poor....lool)
![]() 04/25/2018 at 14:11 |

I don’t know, since we didn’t go with the throttling plan.

My mistake. I misread. Anyway, I’m sure that dealing with a cell phone plan doesn’t even crack the top 100 list of parenting struggles, so good luck with the rest.

I’m going to link the old dial up sound to my internet browsers so the kiddo’s can relive the glory days.

It’s definitely low on the radar. Just getting them to put their shoes on in the morning is a constant struggle.

I’m going to try to hold off until mine is 16 and has a driver’s license...

Counterpoint, that sounds like a bad time for a 1st phone...

Our deal is that we will pay for the insurance, but they have to pay for the deductible any time they break their devices. My daughter kept taking her phone out of the case, despite my repeated warnings. She dropped it and cracked the screen later that night. She took the $150 out of her Christmas/birthday fund to get it repaired.
My son did something to screw up the headphone jack on his phone. He asked for a repair. I asked for the deductible. When he realized it would eat into his Switch fund, he decided that he could listen to music on the radio.

I have unlimited data with T Mobile, and for good reason. I mean, I guess watching Netflix on my data plan instead of using my Wi-Fi isn’t a great reason, but I did use 14 gb alone on Chrome recently.

Daaaaaaanm. I burn through like 2GB
![]() 04/25/2018 at 15:35 |

I used to use very little. All that changed when I opted for unlimited. I have Netflix running a lot - even when I’m not watching it.
I also have a long commute, so I listen to shows while driving. Phone is always tucked away so I’m not watching, but it makes stop and go less terrible to listen to a documentary while driving. Nearly completed the “WW2 in color” series and I just started it. Ha

Believe it or not, 10 has been our threshold. Three down and one to go. We are paying $200+/month, but I feel better knowing they can contact me if needed. It’s the cost of the phones that are killing us. My wife tends to drop them in toilets (one iPhone SE and a Droid Turbo 2) and my son just drops them (one iPhone SE and an iPhone 6 that wasn’t even paid for).

Ours are 11, 9 & 5 - we’ll see how long I can hold out...

I’m looking to get a new iPad (for flying use - ForeFlight on my iPhone 6+ is just too small and limited).
I saw at least one company’s fine print read something like “over 0.5 GB use, you’ll get 2G speeds”.
THAT is why I continue to buy my phones outright as penance for maintaining my 4G unlimited plan with Verizon. Turn on tethering and enjoy. On months during which I take long drives with the kids (think NC-FL or similar), I’ll easily see 30 GB of data use on my cell.
