Wellll.. the missus grew up with a convertible in the family and misses the fun. You’d think living in Seattle a convertible would be a poor choice, but she has the itch. We have a Tacoma, Cayman, and Focus already.
I’m looking for something less than 10 years old, manual, reliable, and when repairs are needed not overly complicated as I do my own maintenance and repairs. It would be nice if you could fit some stuff in it (e.g. two standard sized carry on suitcases). All in budget is $12k => in other words if it needs $2k of work then purchase price needs to be $10K or less.
I’d love a S2000 but the few around here are either horribly molested or been thoroughly thrashed. Miata? Maybe. Boxster? Perhaps. Oppos chime in!

E93 328i (or a 335i if ur feeling bold)
Hardtop vert, still fun to drive, not hard to work on, pretty cheap with around ~60k miles.

BMW and Mercedes occurred to me, but don’t really fit the “reliable” objective, and the parts are far from cheap. I’ll still consider them all the same, but care & feeding are a consideration.

S2000 would be amazing for both of you. Miata is probably the answer though.

Mustang? They should be plentiful and easy/cheap to work on.

Abarth Cabrio. Dirt Cheap Topless Fun.

VW EOS? Camry Solara?
I’d get a 328i... so cool.

I would say a 2009-ish G37 Convertible if you can find one.

Not a manual but:

In seriousness though, there are tons of options in your pricerange. Beyond what you mentioned:
Mustang
Solstice\Sky (including the Redline)
Mini
Eclipse
3-Series
C70 (Though stick shifts seem vanishingly rare)
Go a little older, and you could have an MR2 or one of any number of super-cheap 9-3's.
Not sure about the reliability of those though (I do feel reasonably confident leaving off the EOS)

Most of them are hitting or over the 10 year requirement though, but granted there should be few reliability issues, where that stems from.

1970 Plymouth Fury convertible cash or trade for trailer - $10500 (Tacoma)
yeah, its not that new, but it would sure be fun to cruise around......

Miata and S2000 should both be good no matter old. Even Jakes Miata is reliable magically.

Swap Cayman for Boxster. Easy.

BMW 128i is a good bet. They’re a little stubby looking but I’ve heard they’re fairly reliable.
Other than that, Miata.
S2000 will be rough, boxster will be over 10 years old, I guess mustang Camaro fits but meh. I like my turbo beetle and those come in a convertible.

Mustang
Camaro
Z4
3 series
G35

Chrysler 200

Unfortunately a decent S2k around here is well past the 12k mark :(

Jeep Wrangler seems like it checks all the boxes. Fits stuff, decently reliable, pretty easy to work on. Easy to find with a manual. And you can put a hardtop on it if the rain gets to be too much. Getting one under 10 years old in that price range would be tough though. Here’s an ‘07 manual in an awesome color posted for just under $12k: https://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/d/2007-jeep-wrangler-4wd-manual/6569882028.html

Miata and Mustang off the top of my head. You could go nuts and find an older Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag XK.

I like that, a lot! But she wants a roadster.

My father-in-law has a land barge like that, won’t fit in my garage or my driveway. But it is glorious

MR2 Spyder?

The 328i of the E9x is actually really reliable! No big major problems of note. I have about 100k on an ‘07 and it’s been a a solid machine. Even my 335i has been solidly reliable.

Ah ok. What about a Solstice/Sky? They are getting a little past that 10 year mark, but they are right around $10k and use that Ecotecltor that GM used on everything of that era so parts and maintenance should be easy. The one issue there is no space for stuff. That’s going to be a problem with most roasters except for the Boxster though.

Oooh, missed that. The Alpine Sunbeam project car I found just beforehand was distracting me.

Also if you’re willing to go just a bit older, C5 Corvettes have a damn good reputation for reliability and you should find manual drop tops in your price range. Several people on here have one that can probably answer any questions you’d have.

a land barge like that would be spectacular if your cruising is the kind where you dont have anywhere to be, and just want to enjoy the scenery, or make a day of getting somewhere. like riding on a cloud while sitting on your sofa.
the other car that i was thinking of, too old too, and wouldnt be that dry, and getting your stuff in it would be iffy. a car that would be fun, mostly around corners,
Dune Buggy VW - $5500 (S. Everett)
ever think about an old jeep? actually getting somewhere is half the fun......
1962 CJ5 Willys Jeep 4X4 - $6500 (Ellensburg)
