Is there an Android expert who wouldn’t mind corresponding with me? I have a Google Nexus 5 phone which no longer receives security updates. Phone works great and I just replaced the battery. What risk do I face continuing to use that phone? I don’t have very many apps and they’re all from the Play Store. Thoughts? Thank you.

It’s the equivalent of running Windows XP today on your desktop. Definitely a less secure OS than a current one especially without patches. Be careful and you’re probably fine - plenty of shit in the app store though that can cause you trouble, Google is terrible about properly vetting things.

Do you do any rooting?

Security-wise, it’s probably not a big deal, as long as you don’t go visit shady sites.

I would be more concerned about your power button failing. I have a N5, runs amazingly, but the power button has given up for the 2nd time, and I can’t justify another ~$80 to have a new one soldered in that will only fail again.

I used to do it back when CyanogenMod was around, I don’t any more. I can’t really find trustworthy sources of root/custom roms around now.

I migrated from a Samsung S series to a Motorola G5S Plus last year and love it. It isn’t covered in adware/bloatware and I can put whatever I want on it without Rooting. It’s better than previous nexus phones I’ve owned, and downright cheap new ($250) for a phone.

No shady sites. Power button is hanging in there.

This is probably ridiculous, but it seems to run faster with the new battery. Certainly holds a charge longer.

I like what I hear about the cameras on the Pixel phones. My one go-to friend about Android stuff always pushes the Google phones because security updates. I hate to spend $$ on another phone — I always buy them used from Swappa — when this N5 still works perfectly.

If the risk is my phone turning into a brick, I can live with that. I guess now, we’re into an experiment...

I mean, depending on your power management settings, it might be faster.

Maybe it detected a weakening battery and throttled some things back.
