so that means it sounds “better than i think it should”?......

I’d rate the F80 exhaust note well below that of a 500 Abarth. Take that as you will

Are you talking about the actual noise the exhaust makes, or the piped in ‘exhaust’ noise that comes through the speakers though?

Every time I hear my brother in law start his 335i, I wonder if it needs exhaust work or if it’s supposed to sound like pennies in a metal coffee can.
Which reminds me... I need to fix that heat shield rattle/worn flex pipe on my FX.

I thought it sounded like a broken vacuum cleaner.

Seen here is what sounded like a F80 M3.
I’m sure the actual BMW sounded better. That mofo was loud.

I think you killed Blue Mazda 2...

I always thought that of most M car exhaust. Even the much loved E46 M3, I remember someone say it sounded like a weed wacker from the outside, however it sounded glorious on the inside. And this was before digital sound was added.
Though I know they were piping in sound in certain BMWs back then, though in the “letting you hear the engine better” techniques like snorkels that lead in from the engine compartment. Which was real sound, not fake audio.

The actual exhaust sound as heard from standing outside of the car.

You’re giving it a lot of credit.

I always thought the older ones sounded alright, or even good, like up to E46 and E39.

Not that it sounds that great either way.

Sounds better than the c43s civic fartcan noise

E46 with headers and a CSL intake is all sorts of mmmmmmmmmm.

I said “broken” because it is still a BMW after all.

Pretty sure that’s a dis on broken vacuum cleaners.

If it’s an E9x 335i that’s the active exhaust flap rattling. The same thing happened in mine, I unplugged it from the trunk and its fine now.

Lol.

I’ll try and mention it to him if it comes up, but I’ve kinda stopped offering unsolicited car advise to him for the most part. He’s got a friend at a “Mr. Transmission” who does all his work for him. I always seem to get a “but I think” in response whenever I suggest anything.
Also, the underhood scene in that thing kinda intimidates the crap out of me. No idea how anyone would, say, replace the 3 rearmost spark plugs... For example. Or replace a coilpack, or valve cover gasket, when half of the engine is hidden below the cowl and under the dashboard somewhere. I’m better off not even trying, lol.

It just takes removing a panel in the trunk and unplugging the wire for the active exhaust. I did it because the exhaust just sounds nicer with it always open haha.
I know plenty of guys who are like that.. eventually i just tell myself “it’s not my money” and let them do what they want.
I understand what you’re saying, but once you remove the covers and stuff it’s not toooo bad to work on, and I’m as novice as they get.

I’m not saying the C43 (205) sounds good, but I think it’s better than the F80. 202 C43 sounds better than both.

The V8's sound good, and the E39 M5 is glorious.
Can’t say that about the F80 M car though...
