Knowing the history is good, but Ram Jam’s version is still pretty damn catchy... Hard to know their intent - whether it was a tribute/cover or just appropriation.
“Even though the song was credited to Huddie Ledbetter, the NAACP and Congress of Racial Equality called for a boycott due to the lyrics.”

nothing new under the sun. I only vaguely knew about this. The video recently surfaced on youtube, I was surprised I’d never seen it. They looked kinda what I expected.

Please don’t construe my post as a criticism! I just found those performances fascinating and wanted to share them.

No question, it certainly is.
Regarding tribute/appropriation - I imagine it was sort of 50/50. At the time everybody in show business was a lot less careful about these things. So much so that even someone as well respected (and conscious of this problem) as Pete Seeger has been criticised regarding
The Lion Sleeps Tonight/Mbube.
