Old radio. It sorta works - power it on and it takes a few minutes to warm up and then gives off a nice, mellow hum that you can only get from vacuum tubes. Some tubes may be bad, but it didn’t fire off a bunch of sparks and emit weird odors when powered up, so it has the potential to be revived.

Nice! And it even has the CONELRAD markings in case of emergency. Hey, you never know!

The filters (resistors) are bad causing the hum. In that era they were made from oil soaked paper the oil has dried up.

Very cool! I have a tube radio in my office that I replaced the capacitors in myself. Easy job, and will definitely get rid of the hum. Nothing sounds quite like a tube radio or amplifier.

You’re thinking of capacitors, not resistors.

Cool find. I’ve heard that if you get enough working tubes, you can construct a mnemonic memory circuit that can tell you the course of alternate histories.

Usually by digging around the Goodwill Outlet stores, and to a lesser extent, Craigslist. This radio was a Goodwill find, and being at the outlet center it was just one trip away from the landfill. I couldn’t let that happen to a piece as nice as this...

I went to a goodwill outlet center one time, when you mentioned it once. I was...uncomfortable....

It’s a very weird experience, I’ll grant you that. The first time I went I lasted only a few minutes before I ran for the door. Now I embrace the strangeness of it all. I have become one of the weirdos...

Perhaps I shall give it another try, then...
