... They still have Hardee’s instead of Carl’s Jr.
Mushroom & Swiss burger for the win.

I was going to guess it had to do with ghosts and friendliness.
Hardee’s/Carl’s is a geographical thing, not a timing thing. So did you find the magical boundary?

I don’t think we have many Opponauts from Wyoming because only like twelve people live here. Driving on I-25 North of Cheyenne is B L I S S F U L. You can’t have left-lane squatters in front of you when you’re the only driver for miles.

It’s somewhere in Wyoming, because Cheyenne is Carl’s Jr territory.

I lived there for a while. Just not enough jobs in my field there, otherwise I may never have left.

Unless you get blown off the road! Welcome to windy Wyoming, although it’s been pretty darn windy in Colorado this spring, too.

there are a couple of Hardee’s near me. is the food actually different?

I had to go to Guernsey last week. The wind was horrific, a semi blew over south of Cheyenne, I had to detour on 85 to get back to the Denver airport.

Don’t forget about Taco Johns, you get mexi-fires with your food (tator totos).

Taco Johns. Best mexican food in eastern Wyoming
*technically the only mexican food.

Great, now I want the forbidden treasure that’s goin’ on at Taco John’s.

Does Hardees sell country ham biscuits in WY? Or is it just a southern thing?

It is, but isn’t. Their menus are distinctly different, even though they share a large number of common ingredients. Today, Carl’s Jr continues to have a more western US/west coast oriented menu, while Hardee’s maintains a more Texas/southeast/midwest/plains oriented menu...
I remember the pre-merger Hardee’s as being not really that great, but being available after we moved out of SoCal into their territory. After the merger, Carl’s Jr flooded into our market and Hardee’s locations were closed or converted. I think CKE just cut the country along some line and on the west side they were Carl’s Jr and on the east they were Hardee’s. I also suspect there was some demographic adjustment there, as Californians are fond of Carl’s and certain groups are very attached to it.

Just to complicate this further, about half of our Hardee’s in urban/suburban Alabama added an in-store Red Burrito a few years ago...I heard that was a Carl’s thing, but I’m not sure. But eating burgers and Fauxican food in the same place is great. Just like the rare KFC/Taco Bell combo shops.

Green Burrito and Red Burrito are owned by CKE, yes. Anywhere with Hardee’s gets Red Burrito in the cobranded restaurants, while anywhere with Carl’s Jr gets Green Burrito (the original name). To my knowledge, the food is identical.

I was in Casper for a week for work back in late 2016, and one night I wanted to go out and find a bar that wasn’t located in the hotel. I fired up Uber and Lyft, and got nothing. I asked the person at the front desk if that was usual.
This led to an explanation of what Uber and Lyft are. That led to a puzzled look, followed by a question, “What, so you get into a stranger’s car and they take you somewhere?” I ended up waiting 30 minutes for the most questionable-looking taxi I’d ever set foot in.
Other than that though, I did thoroughly enjoy my visit to Wyoming.

On a trip to visit a friend in VA, I stopped at the Hardee’s drive thru. They had a chicken fried steak with gravy. I ordered it, took 1 bite and realized I’d just gotten a straight mouth full of beef fat and gristle.
The mouth full and the rest of the sandwich went out the window, and that was my one and only Hardee’s experience.
Now Carls Jr on the other hand? Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Gimme.

I love Hardee’s, but I don’t think I’d be willing to try a chicken fried steak from them. Besides, their burgers are great. So are Carl’s Jr’s, but I still am pissed they don’t offer the mushroom and Swiss burger there.

I nearly did on the way back. 60+ mph winds in a nearly empty cargo van is no bueno.

“Umm, legal says we can’t call it ‘mexican’ anymore.”
I do love Taco John’s. I wish the closest one to me wasn’t ten miles away.

The wind here lately has been insane. I’m glad it wasn’t as nasty from Cheyenne to home as it was from Casper to Cheyenne. Though as I’m writing this, the wind has kicked back up again.

We used to get some kind of shroom sandwich, but it isn’t a sticking point for me because we do get their Santa Fe Chicken, which means I can put a green chile on anything like I was in NM or something.

I forgot to look at the breakfast menu, so I’m not sure. Do they still have the smoked sausage breakfast biscuits? Carl’s Jr has them very occasionally, but not often enough because they’re amazeballs.
![]() 04/19/2018 at 21:44 |

Carl’s Jr has those too, and they’re a pretty good deal for too much food.
![]() 04/19/2018 at 21:47 |

They use the same general ingredients, but the menus are different. You can get onion rings and fried zucchini at Carl’s, but not Hardee’s. Hardee’s has curly fries and Carl’s doesn’t. They’re most similar on their breakfast menus, but even there they’re not the same.

Yeah, I travel to the Front Range from Rapid City for work a lot. Not a terribly fun drive in a LWB, high top Sprinter. More than once, we’ve pulled over and stacked the entire contents of the van on the upwind side.
Even in my personal vehicle, it seems like I rarely drive across that state without at least one *moment*.
