There’s a hilarious dearth of covered walking areas in downtown commercial areas too, for a place with such high duration of rain.

Lol. In one of the most consistently wet areas of the U.S. doesn’t have a covered area at a drive through.

Doh!!!!

It’s also coming down pretty hard out there today. The day I’d be called on to help dig a big flat hole (that became and instant mud bog) and prep it for concrete pouring once the rain stops, so my in-laws and their neighborhood can get a locking mail box to deter all the damned tweakers that keep stealing mail.

I wonder why there are relatively few awnings here. You’d think we’d have codes that required them in many places where they’re basically necessary.

I like the sidewalk misters Leavenworth has to keep you cool in the summer. Maybe Seattle could get some of those, but aim them upwards so the mist spray cancels out the raindrops

It’s a Seattle thing I guess. Same reason why you’ll be the odd one out for showing up anywhere with an umbrella, regardless of how much it may be pouring...

Subaru took a long time to finally introduce auto up windows.

It went from heavy to pounding torrential rain a bit ago.

I think the umbrella thing is even deeper and more cultural than it seems at the surface, but I’m not sure on all points:

1) Rain like we have seen today is rare here.

2) Seattle can be quite windy, which damages umbrellas.

3) (This is pure theory) Seattle only relatively recently became a city with considerable social stratification. For most of the city’s history (and still true to some extent), it has been a very blue collar town. The early settlers, both native and European, also came from cultures that glorified a certain kind of stoic disregard for personal comfort. They needed to regularly engage in outdoor physical labor and therefore needed their hands free, which meant hooded rain coats were optimal clothing. A rejection of umbrellas outside a working context may be an explicit rejection of a prominent visible symbol of the bourgeois. This would be in contrast to somewhere like New York City or DC, where using an umbrella would be completely accepted since they have long been composed almost entirely of the bourgeois and bourgeoisie.

Or upward wind generators to blow the rain away. But I’d be happy for a simple awning.

Makes me smirk a little that the greenie planners here who want everyone to walk or use transit don’t work consistently for really adequate pedestrian infrastructure.

I’m trying to think if I knew a covered drive-thru was a thing prior to reading this, but I guess that’s what I get for being a creature of the desert.
